Do you ever think about the little conversations they would have? What they would think or say when they managed to get just a little bit of rest? Because I do.
Anyways, I decided I wanted to draw some TV Show percabeth since I haven’t yet, and made myself sad in the process.
I have a theory that Rick Riordan isn't actually writing for his fans anymore.
He's writing for the family and friends of his fans. Family and friends who are vaguely aware of something called the Percy Jackson series, who know their kid/sibling/whoever is into it, but who don't know anything about it themselves and don't particularly care.
The types of people that, when you mention offhandedly that you play Minecraft, will immediately go out to try and find something, anything, related to Minecraft to gift you for your birthday or Christmas, whichever is coming faster. They're the reason you've ended up with a creeper hoodie, a creeper plushie, a diamond pickaxe printed infinity scarf, three Steve funkopops, a Steve body pillow, Minecraft coloring books, 4 Minecraft themed mugs, 6 Minecraft candles which you can't imagine what they smell like and you're too scared to sniff for yourself, and the whole collection of Minecraft guide books even though you've been playing half your life and, presumably, already know the ins and outs of the game, not to mention it's been updated since those books were published so it's not even accurate anymore.
It doesn't matter what the item is to these people, they just see the Minecraft branding and immediately think "Oh this'd be perfect for Brayden, he loves Minecraft!" Replace Minecraft with Percy Jackson, and there's the ticket.
He doesn't need these books to be good. He just needs these books to come attached with the Percy Jackson branding so that parents who are out of the loop end up buying it for their kids, because they don't know about the decline of Rick's work like the actual fans themselves do.

Something that I think is really funny is that the word Anaklysmos (Riptide) doesn't even exist, it's just a combination of a suffix that means above and the verb κλύζω which means to ripple😭 [Help, even my Greek keyboard doesn't even recognize the word]
I read these books when I was 12 and as a native Greek speaker that also studied ancient Greek for 6 years, I fully thought this was an actual word because it sounds Greek but it's not 😭 Mf Rick Riordan gaslit me in my own language. Apparently he asked an ancient Greek professor and told him that this was the closest word he could use but like, my question is why😭? There are so many already existing words that are related to the sea and even if they don't directly translate to 'Riptide', just pick a Greek word and paraphrase it when translating it to English like it's not hard 😭
