tw: mention of alcohol, death, emotional abuse, and sickness
- Jake cannot cook, his parents never really taught him before they left. However, his mother and grandmother used to bake treats for him and any friends he brought over as kids. One day after realizing Rich had seemed down for the week, Jake finds his family’s old cookbook and tries out the recipe written down for banana bread. He sucks at baking, it takes him 3 different tries to get the little sf to look edible. He brings it to Rich one morning before school. It isn’t the best banana bread ever, it’s actually kind of dry and a little bland because Jake didn’t use enough banana. But Rich’s dad hadn’t bought groceries in 2 weeks, so this meant a lot to him and Jake didn’t even know he was struggling with food.
- Jake doesn’t really understand the appeal for video games other than sports related ones. Due to the SQUIP’s advice, Rich never told Jake just how much he enjoying gaming. They’d played FIFA together a few times, a NASCAR game here and there, but not anything Rich was really invested in. So post-SQUIPs when Rich began hanging out with Michael and Jeremy as a means to actually geek out over video games, Jake would tag along when invited. He didn’t understand anything they were talking about, he didn’t even know Rich was into gaming like that. When a new game came out for the DS, Jake recalled Rich taking Michael’s DS, but had returned it. Michael and Jeremy were both able to get a copy, but without the console at all, Rich obviously couldn’t play. Jake felt bad for Rich, worried he would feel left out. He asked Michael and Jeremy for advice on which DS to get Rich for his birthday and with their guidance and with the money he used from private football and archery lessons he gives to younger kids, he saved up and bought Rich the console and the game.
- Jake doesn’t like using his parents’ money for anything other than bills, which is why he strives to make money even though he was technically already wealthy enough to not need it. He didn’t trust the money his parents ‘owned’, so the more money he was able to make on his own and legally the better.
- Rich snuck Jake in through his window one night so they could spend the night together after Jake had expressed to Rich that he felt lonely in that big, empty house of his. Rich’s dad found out and began to yell at Rich over it despite Rich trying to stick up for Jake. Rich’s dad inevitably demanded Jake go home, but he’d walked that night instead of taking his car over. Rich’s older brother hearing the yelling, came out of his room and offered to take Jake home for Rich. Rich’s brother was the only family member Rich had come out to, even though the two of them argued a lot. Rich’s brother almost felt protective over Jake now that he could see that was the guy Rich had taken a liking to. Jake and Rich’s brother drove to Jake’s house alone where Rich’s brother told Jake that soon he would have enough money from his job to move out of his dad’s house. He promised Jake that when he had his own place, he and Rich were welcome to stay as long as they wanted if it meant having a safe place to be themselves.
- Rich’s mother died from cancer due to their family being unable to further afford her treatment. This is as what led to his father becoming an alcoholic and had been what turned their once comfortable family into nothing but anger and hurt. Before his mother died, she had been teaching Rich how to cook simply because he wanted to spend time with his mom and was a fast learner. He learned how to bake cookies, he learned how to make pasta, how to properly cook meat. With his mother gone, his father barely bought ingredients in order to make these meals, they lived off of microwave dinners. Once when Rich had been over at Jake’s house, he noticed Jake was buying ingredients to fill the large fridge and pantry with, but didn’t know how to use them. He was simply trying to replicate what his kitchen used to look like before his parents left. Rich saw this as an opportunity to teach Jake how to cook. Not only did this actually use the ingredients properly, but it also provided Rich and Jake with actual home cooked meals instead of frozen food and snacks. Jake and Rich would cook together one night a week after wrestling practice, making sure to make enough for left overs for the both of them, as well as a serving or two for Rich’s brother who also lacked the comfort of freshly cooked food.
- Jake is a very heavy sleeper. Rich can kick and climb all over him while they sleep, and he won’t wake up. This makes for some interesting mornings when they wake up in questionable positions that they hadn’t fallen asleep in the night before.
- Jake has a pitbull that was meant to be their house’s ’guard dog’ but in typical pitbull fashion, she was really just sweet and over protective of Jake. Rich has a small fear of dogs after getting bit as a child at the park. It was safe to say he wasn’t originally a fan of her. After being over at Jake’s house enough though, it was evident that she wouldn’t ever hurt Rich. However, it came as a surprise to both of them when during one Jake and Rich’s play fights, she began to snarl at Jake after he tackled Rich on to his back. Jake feigned being hurt at this betrayal, but he was so happy that she protected Rich instead of him that he could hardly contain it. He gave her extra food that night as a reward. Rich was no longer afraid of dogs.
- Rich adopted a bearded dragon from a pet store that was closing down. His dad said no, told him he had to get rid of it. Jake took this bearded dragon in with loving arms, keeping it in a large enclosure. He bought a book to make sure he was caring for it properly and assured Rich he could come see his lizard whenever he pleased. When Jake and Rich moved in together after high school, the bearded dragon had a rightful place in their home.
- Sometimes Jake brings Rich to the lessons he’s teaching to kids looking to improve their football skills. Rich, who already worked with kids at a daycare, was a hit with Jake’s students. He made them laugh and reassured them things would be okay whenever they got frustrated. Every time after when Rich wasn’t there with Jake to help out with lessons, Jake’s students would beg for Rich to come back. Rich ended seeing each student about once a month and would sometimes bring them snacks for after their lesson.
- Rich and Jake take the world cup very seriously and get miniature versions of every countries flag. They hang these little flags up on their walls in their apartment and rip them down one by one as the games go on. Rich doesn’t care for it nearly as much as Jake does, he thinks the flags are a little too much. But Jake has so much fun doing it that he watches every game with him just because it makes him happy.
