Well she has a very unique and pretty voice in the english dub, which I think helped me become attached to her early on.
Though establishing her as my favorite of the ham-ham gang is a more recent thing since for a long time I was solely dedicated to Prince Bo.
Now I'm putting my extended thoughts under the cut because I started writing a lot more than I intended, but I think a lot of people will appreciate why I love Bijou as not just my favorite of the Ham-Ham gang, but as a character
To get into it, I enjoy that she's sweet, sincere, and caring. She's not perfect, however, she does care quite a bit about superficial things as well such as her ribbons. (You could argue that it's because they have special meaning to her as Maria gave her those ribbons. It's superficial thing which has particular meaning to her.)
Episodes like "Bijou's Favorite Ribbon" are great character growth for her as she's hurt by Hamtaro using her ribbon for a marco-polo styled game. But by the end she uses the same ribbon to help Hamtaro when he hurt his paw. Showing that Bijou, above all, cares and she cares about what's important. Making sure her friends are okay and making things right.
Her caring causing her to go above and beyond more often than not. Especially in the case of "Bijou's Memorable Picture Book" where she travels with Hamtaro with Françoise through a snowstorm. To a town she's never been to before, and even when Françoise has to stop because of the snow, she's determined to press forward on her own because of how much it means to Maria to get this letter to her Grandmother.
and they don't even know if they're going to FIND the grandmother there, but Bijou is determined to go the distance. If anything, Hamtaro being there helps to reign her in so that determination doesn't cause her to do anything reckless.
Honestly, this episode showed me that Bijou is actually very similar to Hamtaro in more ways than we think. In that she loves her owner so much she'd go a perilous journey just to see her smile. In a way I wouldn't doubt Hamtaro would for Laura.
In this way it makes sense then that, besides her obvious crush, why she's partnered with Hamtaro a lot in games such as Ham-Ham Heartbreak. Dynamically they are very similar, driven by similar goals of altruism and caring. Yet different enough in Hamtaro's weakness being his naΓ―ve obliviousness and Bijou being a bit selfish, herself.
At the same time, it's why when the girls are doing things. Bijou is more often than not the designated "leader" of them. Since thematically she's the most similar to Hamtaro, she takes the initiative. Due in no small part to said determination.
Honestly I could go on. (Half of this was admittedly me remembering things and then adding them in like "Oh, and another thing")
But I think you guys get the idea. I see Bijou as not just the adorable, sweetie she is. But a very dynamically interesting character that people tend to overlook since she's the "popular choice." There's a lot more to Bijou than ribbons and Hamtaro.
