Rhumblines
A rhumbline is useful in oceanic navigation because it represents a constant bearing or compass direction. You’ll see them as straight, diagonal lines on old maps in the Mercator projection.
Contrast this with a great circle, which is the shortest distance between two points on a globe. This is not a straight line on a Mercator projection:
Following a great circle, thus going in a straight line, when navigating with a compass is actually super hard unless you are exceptionally good at doing trigonometry in your head. Luckily we all have GPS now, so compass bearings are not as essential for navigation. So why is Mercator still so ubiquitous then? Because now we like to navigate by panning and zooming on web maps, which looks smoother if lines of equal bearing, or linear scale, is preserved.

(Mod) Got to keep Palette from seeing this one. It's Autumn Gale and Rhumbline spending a private moment together before Rhumbline leaves on another one of his voyages.
(A commissioned work from Toastiepony. She is open for more comissions, click the link to get this work on DA and get the Commissioning info)
(Mod) Cover art for a future chapter of "The Ties that Bind". In this piece, Rhumbline is a bit peeved that Twilight put a sleeping spell on him to help him recover, and Winter Gale is doing her duty as a Royal Guard by trying to talk Rhumbline down
(This is a Commissioned work from Dembai. Everyone wish her good luck on her new baby, which will be coming very soon (if not already))
