So Beast Machines rightfully gets a lot of criticism for how it handled Rhinox.
... Turns out IDW1 (predictably) wrote Rhinox EVEN WORSE!
What was the point of including any of the Beast Wars characters besides Tarantulas when all the writers were going to do was shove middle fingers in the face of every Beast Wars fan. No wonder people don't talk about IDW1 Rhinox! Screw you, Barber!
Richard Newman voicing Tankor-Rhinox the way he did was the only thing that redeemed the Tankor plotline even a little bit for me.
Like, in what world would Rhinox genuinely believe Megatron's authoritarian approach to "peace" (oppression) was actually the right way to move forward? Rhinox is the philosopher that discusses the metaphysical side (thus creating groundwork that all series would use afterwards) and basically confirms not only the existence of a "spark" but that the spark is basically a soul. Why would he ditch his personal beliefs like that?
Also, if you're paying attention in Beast Wars... Rhinox isn't necessarily a "listen to all sides no matter what" type. Like, sure, if you had a reasonable point of view, he would listen. However, he's besties with Rattrap. He can sniff BS and has never shown much patience for posturing. Remember that this is the guy who charged THROUGH a pile of boulders instead of going around them and, at a different point, lifted Dinobot by the throat when he ran out of patience.
There was a way you could make this work. Richard Newman had the better idea that made more sense for the character. The writers really should have followed his lead on this.
