They spend every day from 6am to 6pm in the wildness learning to browse and be a part of the wild. They may even encounter other wild animals, which will help them learn how to respond when they are on their own in the future. This way, when it’s time to re-introduce them to the wild, the Reteti elephants will be prepared. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), in northern Kenya is the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa. The sanctuary provides a safe place for injured elephants to heal and later, be returned back to the wild. The sanctuary rescues and cares for elephant calves who were orphaned as a result of drought, human-wildlife conflict and poaching. When they are old enough, the elephants will be reintroduced into the wild, where they have a good chance of reuniting with the herds they were initially separated from.
