New girl is still very shy but doing well! She was calling to Agatha and Squeak this morning, and they responded. ❤️ I also learned that she is not an Australorp but a black Jersey giant!! Last photo is the rooster she was found with. No one has claimed him and I told the AC officer that I'll get him next week if he's still available. Why? Hmm, what's in here? 🤔 Not even a week after losing Bubbles, the same friend who helped me find her and Squeak contacted me to say the city shelter had another chicken needing a home. RIP Bubbles. ❤️ One of my special needs/rescue hens was looking off but seemed to rally before suddenly going downhill fast. I suspected I'd have to let her go and this was confirmed on Wednesday when I found her in very bad shape. I took her in that afternoon to be humanely euthanized, and performed a necropsy at home. As suspected, she had salpingitis, one of the worst cases I have ever seen. I will be sharing the necropsy pics on my blog soon for anyone who is curious as to what this looks like. Sadly, the chances of losing production breeds to reproductive disorders is very high; they're bred to produce as many eggs as possible and killed around age 2. If you let them live a normal life, their hyper-productive reproductive system tends to short circuit. A similar issue killed my first hen, Bobette, and I'll likely lose Squeak to something similar. As sad as this is, I am so grateful to have these sweet hens in my life. The rescues are always the gentlest and kindest to their fellow chickens. There are no wasted carrots in this house! We try and keep our waste low, but occasionally there will be a carrot top or squished strawberry hanging around and our animals LOVE them!
