My Ball Python, roughly every other time we feed him, tries to drown his rat (by which I mean, he tries to drown himself because he grabs his rat and coils it inside his water bowl) is this a normal thing for ball pythons? He fights us when we try to pull his head out.
Hes watching the pwhl.
Hes being so good today
CW/TW: snake (I think he’s cute, but I understand if you just don’t want to see one)
Fav thing about owning a Kenyan sand boa is the face he makes when he’s ready for food

infodump about your favorite kind of snake
Thanks for asking! My favorite snake is this little guy
He’s a cornsnake, Pantherophis guttatus, an okeetee morph (which is just a fancy name for the classification of his patterning) He’s three years old, and I’ve had him for over two of them. My first pet reptile, and he’s got quite the adventurous attitude. You may recognize him from my banner!
But if your asking about my favorite species of snake, then the winner is this little guy
The California Kingsnake, Lampropeltis getula californiae, pictures provided by the lovely contributors of Californiaherps.com (seriously, if you need to do research on reptiles and amphibians, this is the place to go, they even have compilations specific down to the county).

California Kingsnakes are are named as such because they prey on other, oftentimes venomous, species of snakes. This includes rattlesnakes!
(There are some morbidly awe-inspiring videos of these guys hunting rattlers, I recommend watching some for educational purposes if you’re curious!)
This animal is fascinating to me. One of the reasons being that they are overlooked by popular media, oftentimes in favor of the rattlesnake. Rattlers pose a bigger threat to humans, so it makes sense that they take up a bigger space in our consciousness, our art. (Think Rattlesnake Jake from Rango for instance)
However, it itches my brain that one of its most significant predators, is practically harmless to us! (Although they can be a bit nippy as noted by people who have captive bred California Kingsnakes) It is satisfyingly ironic.
They also are just very pretty! Here is a link to a website which shows some of the interesting morphs for California Kingsnakes that are circulating in the reptile community, all of which are striking!
While they may not be as well known as ball python for having morphs, the California kingsnake actually does have some beautiful morphs!
Thanks again for asking, I hope this was adequately informational!
I'm running a k*ckstarter for lizard enamel pins! 🦎 We already have funded the first two designs (see the list below the cut) before I even got to post here :) The earlybird prices end on Oct 22! Please share with your reptile loving friends 🫶
