The air within this room has grown torrid, as though the two of them stand underneath a blistering sun in the midst of a desert. Certainly the young Shinigami could feel it in his throat, the slight difficulty to breathe from the reiatsu imposed. Yamamoto had once thought to himself Ichimaru was lucky, and it was being proven once more. Though this luck was not given to him by birth but bestowed upon him by none other than the Captain Commander himself.
Why was it that he felt the need to pass clemency on him, to grant him mercy? Perhaps that wasn’t the appropriate question to ask but rather why did he feel the young man deserved it. Yamamoto would not tell him but he saw something within him that lay far beneath the mask he so carefully fastened to his face. He had lived a millennia three times over and with that time came a wisdom that could not be achieved no matter how intellectual an individual was. He had seen the birth of nations and their fall. He had outlived every soul he had ever known. Only with these experiences could one comprehend his own line of thinking.
He had attained a level of reasoning outside the logics others imposed. It was why he had gone against Central 46′s desire to have Ichimaru disposed of. Yamamoto hadn’t needed to plead his judgement of the situation but he had placated them with the reminder that there were still three vacancies in the aftermath of defection. His words had soothed most of their anxieties well enough but in truth, it hardly held weight in his choice on such a matter.
“You owe it to me.” Yamamoto agrees with Ichimaru, fixing the other with a stern look as if to say do not make me regret this alternative I have given you. He does not enjoy seeing this blatant shift within the man though, it hearkens at a tender part of him not often probed. There had been such promise in him, there still was such promise in him, and he had nearly squandered it all… Yamamoto could understand the sentiment. Even the most gifted could be made foolhardy if they were pushed the right way.
“But you are not to remain empty, Ichimaru. Fill that hollowness in you and thrive.” His tone is every bit a firm command rather than the suggestion it may seem. One he expects will be followed without fail this time. “You had promised me once to not tarnish the haori you wore. I expect that this time you do not disappoint me… There will not be another chance for you if you do, otherwise I will personally deal with you.”
