A bit of a self-indulgent piece, but I’ve wanted to draw these two together ever since Little Shadows II. My mind locked onto Buddy like “Oh. OH. I need him to meet Remington.”.
Frankly, it’s a bit funny instantly thinking of original characters and original story work while you’re reading your chapter for the week. XD
A little context for those that want it!
- I made this comparison purely because of their thieving pasts and how that ended up for them. While Buddy ended up turned into a Key, Remington turned his life around when he and his twin sister met their adoptive mother and became her apprentices as detectives.
- Also the fact that both of them had relatively similar pasts in this regard. If Remington didn’t have his sister that looked after him/to look after, he probably would’ve ended up exactly like Buddy at this point in his life, bitter and alone. Even so, deep down, both are good people at heart. They’re just put in situations that push them to do things like steal.
- Frankly, I’ve put a little thought into a potential AU just so Buddy is temporarily adopted by Adeline and ends up as another apprentice. Half-because I wondered about how he’d acclimate to the situation (and most definitely clock Remington’s habits as using a polite facade to cover up his past) and half-because that mind needs to be nurtured with knowledge and he’d make for a pretty good private eye. He’d still find a way to get to the present day via key transformation, though.

Yay 🥳
Alternate universe where Remington has four eyes (and her brother’s powers) and Billiam has one eye (and his sibling’s powers)
Remington suffers from insecurity and a sense of inferiority stemming from his so-called “lackluster powers”, however, on further inspection it simply is a “grass is always greener” situation: Remington would feel unfulfilled with any two powers granted to him. A telepathy power would grant her a bit more help in social situations in day-to-day life because she could simply check what people are thinking about her and other things, buuut I think she would feel morally conflicted about it. She would not use it very much for long stretches of time, then feel her place in the pecking order slide down, use it again, and then once again feel really guilty about it, rinse and repeat. She would not care for insects in the slightest.
Fortunately, Remmie would have a far easier time interacting with the humans in the physical realm! However, their desire to leave humans “untampered with” and a simultaneous deep desire to get to know humans and be known would make it so that they’d constantly pingpong between acting overly friendly and clinging to everyone’s sides, and withdrawing and surveying people’s actions from afar. As time goes on and he realises that he only ends up making people uneasy and distance themselves from him, he would fall into similar parasocial tendencies he has in the actual canon Sirpaverse.
Billiam famously has a complete and utter disregard for people’s privacy and autonomy, because he has always been able to completely ignore them. Not anymore! Bill would be just as flamboyant and silly as he is canonically, but he would be way nicer to be around and more considerate, dare I say. He wouldn’t really develop an interest in insects and entomology having zero ties to it, but his interest and fascination with ghosts would be reinforced, eventually driving him to disobey the idea people’s only rule and enter the physical realm.
Bill runs into the same obstacle as canon Remmie does: how does one communicate with humans with no speech or writing or anything? Well! Unlike Remmie, who is obsessed with appearing like a perfect human, Billiam thrives on acting like a cartoon character. He can’t convey everything, but via body language, random props, and elaborate pantomimes and puppet shows, he could convey a lot. To poor Remmie’s dismay, Billiam would end up being quite well-liked by the humans he interacts with, partially because he would actually respect you, partly because, I mean, you can’t really hate something so silly. On the flip side, Billiam continues to be unknowable to everyone, but…. Who cares!! Party time!!!

That attack reminded me: Billiam can make text (even floating text!), but Remington cannot. This is because idea people cannot naturally communicate with physical life, but Billiam can use his telepathy power to bridge the gap between what he means to convey and what he can physically idea-lly convey. He demonstrates this text ability in his new reference sheet that I haven’t posted on tumblr yet:
