According to the Gospel of Luke, Zechariah got God’s announcement that he and his aged wife, Elizabeth, would have a son whose mission would be to prepare Israel for the coming of the Messiah. That boy was John the Baptist, and now you see the antique Russian icon depicting the scene of the birth of the famous preacher. The curious fact is that the baby was supposed to be named after his father, but Elizabeth objected and stated that his name would be “John.” The original version of the icon dates back to 1475-1500.

There is more to Goa than sun, sand, blue skies, tourists and good food. The best way to explore Goa is on a 2-wheeler. So a recent trip to the sunny state, I did just that. Besides soaking up the sun and breathing the fresh air, you can’t help but notice the numerous churches, chapels and grottos that dot the lovely, narrow, long winding road mostly covered by trees. Goa – a former Portuguese colony is a Catholic stronghold in western India. 25% of the Goan populace is Roman Catholic and that explains why. These religious symbols zip past you on the left, right and sometimes right in the middle of the street. Some are crafted from local red stone, however, most of them are painted white. According to the canonical gospels, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilat for Christ’s body on the evening of the Crucifixion. The Roman governor granted the request, which allowed the secret disciple to wrap the body in linen and lay it in the tomb. However, all four gospels provide different details about the entombment. For example, the Gospel of John says that Joseph was assisted by Nicodemus, while other versions claim that he was alone. The featured 15th-century Russian icon most probably refers to Matthew and Mark’s stories where Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting opposite the tomb.

Saint Pantaleon Icon from Saint Paraskevi Orthodox Church in Adam is an incredible religious work of art dedicated to Saint Pantaleon, a martyr of Nicomedia in Bithynia. Painted by Athanasios Vasilikos Adaminos in 1887, it stands as a celebration of the glory and kindness of one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The saint was known as a brilliant doctor who became the patron saint of midwives and physicians. Today, the icon is held at Saint Paraskevi Orthodox Church in Adam, Thessaloniki, Greece.
