I’ve had people tell me “you should actually read the Bible sometime” like it’s a gotcha, when in reality, reading it all the way through is one of the reasons I stopped believing.
If more believers read their holy book with the same critical thought they’d bring to any other book, and if they stopped skimming for comfort and started looking straight at what’s there, I think there’d be way more agnostics.
I want to stab a Jew.
Why do you want to stab the Jew?
Because he stole our land.
They stole our land. With what do you want to stab them?
With a knife.
Oh, you're so strong! Allah willing, my dear.

Brainwashing your child to want to kill people over an imaginary nation that doesn't exist and never existed. This is what the western Kaffiyeh Karens support.
Can we talk about the fact that cult psychologists and those who study the history of cults will always specify that “cult” has no hard definition? Because the more I learn about the way the most destructive cults operate vs the way that a lot of churches operate, the more I think the only reason they specify that is because invoking a true definition would also describe the Christian church (and other organized religions). They can’t say “hey this pastor and his congregation are a cult” because that’s “religious discrimination”. (I put that in quotes because Christians love to say how oppressed they are, saying genuine criticism is infringing on their freedom of speech and right to practice religion and as someone who grew up in it, I am so fucking tired of it.)

for those wondering if this is a vent or a horny post, the answer is yes
On the question of why so many people are leaving the church. Of how our grief is inextricably intertwined with a deep loss of faith and sense of self. On how healing begins, one day, one step, one act of defiant joy at a time.
People are leaving religion behind because “love” delivered by a hand that holds a blade to your neck and tells you in no uncertain terms that it is conditional, is not love. Because when someone says they love you, but follow it with “you made me do this”, it is not love. Because the expectation that you carve out the marrow of who you are in order to be worthy of acceptance, is harm. You cannot tell someone that they are loved, and in the same breath follow it with, “but…”. Because grace cannot be delivered under lock and key. It can only ever be freely given, or not at all. Benediction is not a bargaining chip and love is not a cudgel to be wielded for obedience.
We are not less for being imperfect and imperfectly human. We are not less because we bloom in all the infinite variations that nature granted us. We are not unworthy of love and forgiveness and acceptance for failure to conform or failure to obey. We are wonderful, and wonderfully made.
