Birthdays are weird as an adult.
When you're a kid, its exciting: the gifts, the friends, balloons, cake - Oh! The Cake! everything is this smorgasbord of gifts and a sugar high. Later, you don't remember more than one or two of these birthdays, beyond the general cheer and fun. As you get older you may not ever remember the names of the kids who came to your birth extravaganza.
Teen birthdays are low(er)-key, but still no less exciting. Friends, snacks, cake (still the Cake) - hoping your mom or dad doesn't ruin it. Or your younger sibling. Those you remember more clearly. I remember my 18th birthday party more than my 16th.
As an adult, birthdays are...less important. The older you get the less important it becomes - even if all you want is to enjoy a overly bright, too sugared Cake with friends and balloons. Most of the time you get a cupcake at work - maybe someone prompts everyone to sing. Maybe they take you to lunch - and those people sing. And often you buy your own gifts - a little gift to me! - or point anyone who asks to certain things.
And sometimes you write self-reflective nonsense online while listening to blues music, and thinking you need to shoot (with an insulin needle) your diabetic cat. And probably harvest the last of the rosemary and mulch the beds.
But it's also rainy and autumnal and I'm thinking about Tennessee whiskey, and smokey blues bars
Happy birthday to me, and happy Halloween week.
