Seeing these guys has been a goal of mine for some time, both because I like squirrels and because I grew up on Redwall, Mistmantle, Beatrix Potter, and other stories about European woodland creatures. They eluded me the last time I was in Europe, but I managed to see two (and photographed one) on this trip! It must not have appreciated me sneaking up on it, though, because it made it clear that I wasn't welcome. Never meet your heroes...
This is the same species as the Ezo squirrels that I photographed last year, but a different subspecies and quite different in color. Both times, I saw the squirrels in July, when they don't have their characteristic ear tufts. Someday, I'll see them in their full, fuzzy-eared glory.
