That was then. This is now. This is me.
why’d you only call me when you’re high? jason todd x roy harper
Now it's three in the morning
And I'm trying to change your mind
Left you multiple missed calls
And to my message you reply
Why'd you only call me when you're high?
“Uhh… hey Harper. It’s me.”
Jason’s normally booming voice sounds as if he is nothing but a child. He wishes he knew Roy as a child. Perhaps the boy would have filled that gaping hole inside of him left by the absence of his parents. Maybe he wouldn’t have needed robin, or even Bruce.
“I um-”
His voice cracked like it used to when he tried to lie to Bruce. The boy slaps hard down onto his leg, the sudden pain dull in comparison to the stabbing in his chest. Jason runs a bloodied hand through his unwashed hair as the sweat builds up on his forehead.
The waking rays of rare Gotham City sun peaks through his dusty blinds. Jason has been sitting in the same spot in their shared apartment going on hours now. An empty bottle of cheap scotch clatters onto the hardwood as Jason suddenly lurches forward. He sits hunched over the edge of their ratty couch, his vision swarming and all of tonight’s mistakes were threatening to resurface.
Jason takes a deep breath when his abused stomach starts to quiet down. He clenches the phone in his hand.
“Fuck this.”
He shoots up and flings the cell across the room, slamming against the wall then the floor with two reverberating thunks.
The former robin collapses on the floor, partly due to his intoxication but mostly the overwhelming wave of grief that knocks him onto his knees. He feels his stomach flip again, and lets out an animalistic cry. His floor shakes as his landlord knocks the ceiling from the room below, screaming for the boy to quiet down or get lost. Jason crumbles into an unmoving heap. In his sorry state, he tries to imagine a world with just him and Harper. No Red Hood or Arsenal, and certainly not Batman or Green Arrow.
Just Jason and Roy. Alone. In peace.
There is nothing he wouldn’t give.
Three consecutive beeps sound off from the corner of the room. “If you are happy with your message, please hang up.”
Happy? He’ll never be happy again.
Not without Roy on the other side of the phone.
The mirror's image It tells me it's home time But I'm not finished 'Cause you're not by my side
"Crowbars don't kill people. Explosions in Ethiopia do."
Or, I find writing Jason Todd dialogue to be far too easy.
