My Neighbor's Red Oak Had Oak Wilt and We Didn't Catch It in Time
There's a red oak two doors down from me that came down in pieces over about three weeks last summer. Not from a storm, not from age. Oak wilt. I didn't even know what that was until my neighbor started asking around, and honestly, by the time anyone figured out what was happening, it was already too late to save the tree.
I'm writing this up because I think most people in Monmouth County, myself included until last year, have no idea this disease exists or how fast it moves once it gets going.
The first thing anyone noticed was a section of the canopy looking a little off. Not dead, just kind of dull, bronze-ish at the edges of the leaves instead of the usual deep green. My neighbor figured it was just stress from a dry stretch we'd had that spring. A lot of us were watering more than usual and assuming drought was the culprit for anything that looked unhappy.
Within maybe three weeks, that dull section had spread to most of the upper canopy, and leaves were dropping, still partially green, way earlier than they should have been. That's when someone finally called an arborist.
What we learned it actually was
Turns out oak wilt is a fungal disease, and red oaks specifically are really vulnerable to it because of how their internal water-transport system is structured. The fungus basically clogs it up. Once symptoms show, the tree can decline shockingly fast, we're talking weeks, not seasons.
The part that really got me was learning it doesn't just stay in one tree. It spreads underground through root systems when trees grow close enough together that their roots physically fuse. Anyone with a couple of mature oaks near each other, which describes half the yards on our street, is potentially at risk once one tree gets infected.

The tree that got taken down as a precaution
Here's the part that surprised me most. The arborist recommended cutting the root connection between the infected tree and the healthy oak next to it before removing the sick one, specifically so the fungus wouldn't get pushed toward the healthy tree during the process. That's apparently a real technique, severing root grafts with specialized equipment, not just something they made up on the spot.
The infected tree came down. The neighboring oak, so far, has stayed healthy. I don't know for certain that the root graft cutting is why, but the arborist seemed pretty confident it mattered.
What I wish we'd known sooner
If any of us had recognized that early canopy discoloration for what it actually was instead of assuming drought stress, there might have been more options. Once a red oak has significant vascular damage, treatment options narrow fast, and mostly the response shifts to protecting everything around the sick tree rather than saving it.
I looked into it after the fact and found that Rutgers actually has a whole extension program that deals with exactly this kind of thing. If I'd known to reach out earlier in the season when the symptoms first showed up, we might have gotten a faster diagnosis.
Things I didn't expect to have opinions about
I never thought I'd be the person on the street explaining root graft biology to a neighbor over the fence, but here we are. A few other things I picked up along the way that surprised me: apparently the beetles that spread this thing between non-connected trees are drawn to the smell of the fungal mats, which is a detail that made the whole thing feel a lot more concrete than "the disease spreads somehow." And apparently white oaks are much less susceptible than red oaks, which explains why the big white oak in my own yard wasn't something the arborist seemed worried about at all when they were out looking at the situation.
None of this makes me an expert, obviously. But it's the kind of thing that's genuinely useful to know before you need it, not after.
What the street looks like now
It's been a little over a year, and honestly the gap where that tree used to be still looks strange every time I drive past it. The neighbor planted something smaller in its place, not another oak, understandably. A few of us on the street have started actually paying attention to our own trees in a way we didn't before, checking the canopy every spring instead of just assuming everything's fine because it was fine last year.
I don't think any of us are tree experts now or anything close to it. But we at least know what to look for and who to call if something looks off, which is more than any of us knew fifteen months ago.
The part about cost that nobody warns you about
One thing I wasn't prepared for was how the timeline compresses the decision-making. This isn't like a slow-declining tree where you have a season or two to think it over, get quotes, compare options. Once the arborist confirmed what it was, the recommendation was to move fairly quickly, both for the removal and the root graft work on the healthy tree next door. My neighbor didn't have weeks to shop around for the best price, and I think that caught them off guard financially more than the diagnosis itself did.
If I were doing it over, I'd want to already know a tree service I trusted before an emergency like this happened, rather than scrambling to vet someone while a fungal infection is actively spreading underground toward the tree next door.
A lot of us have mature oak canopies on this side of the county, some of these trees are probably 60, 80 years old. That's not something you get back once it's gone, and apparently oak wilt doesn't care how old or established a tree is. It moves through red oaks specifically pretty aggressively once it takes hold.
If your oak's canopy looks a little off this summer, especially any bronze discoloration starting at the leaf edges, don't assume it's just a dry spell like we did. Get someone who actually knows trees to look at it. Rutgers Cooperative Extension has good background information if you want to understand what you're even looking for before calling anyone. The USDA Forest Service also has solid material on how this disease actually spreads, which is what convinced me this wasn't just a random tree having a bad year.
