Nico di Angelo sat on the cold stone sill, his knees pulled tightly against his chest, his chin resting on the worn fabric of his dark trousers. He was seventeen today, though the passage of years in this forgotten valley was a blurred, spectral thing, marked not by celebrations or calendars but by the slow, bleeding shift of the autumn leaves and the annual arrival of the pale, distant lights that rose over the southern horizon.His hair was both his sanctuary and his anchor, a massive, ink-black mass that sat in heavy, heavy coils across the floorboards like sleeping serpents. Seventy feet of thick, unbroken silk that never tangled, never frayed, and never stopped growing, pooling around his small frame until he looked almost drowned by his own shadow. It smelled faintly of ozone, sharp iron, and crushed pomegranates—the rich, heavy scent of the deep earth where the sun never reached.
