“Mommy?” Your daughter’s small voice sounded as you tugged her in.
“Yes Daisy?” You answered as you sat down on the bedside.
“Will you tell me a bedtime story?” Daisy looked at you hopefully with a sparkle in her green eyes. “Of course, let’s see…”
So, this story begins back in the days where Sam and Dean were yet still new to hunting by each other’s sides, now that their dad was dead. They weren’t as much heroes at that time as they became, but they were still heroes to me. This is about how they became inseparable, about how Sam and Dean became the team they did.
They experienced a lot of things within a year. All from simple things as demons and werewolves to Djinns creating alternate universes for them. To which Dean came to realize with a lot of things. These boys not only grew up too fast, they also grew up to having a life that none of them ever really wanted.
Dean wanted nothing more than for Sam to have a normal life with a wife, kids and a boring normal job. Just like Sam wanted the same both for Dean and himself. Dean never said it though, he kept it a secret, just like he did with so many things.
He kept silent about how he wanted just as much to have an apple pie life. Dean had always wanted to have a normal life, which he often showed in the way he took care of Sam. He tried to let Sam be a kid for as long as he could as well as he always tried to make Sam get the best of the best. Even their pranks could be for Dean to just get some time off from saving the world; the task that they had never asked for.
These boys had never asked to be the heroes they became. Dean had confronted himself, his dad, hell even Sam about it. Dean always questioned, why they couldn’t have a normal life; just be civilians. Instead they had to be these so called heroes, that saved the world whenever it needed it. Their family business or so it became. Saving people, protecting them; hunting the things that goes bump in the night.
You see, the thing that shaped these boys were the things, they were put through. Besides all the monster hunting, they had the expectations to each other, even more so to themselves. Sam always wanted to be this strong person who didn’t get hurt. He wanted to be the hero, he always saw his brother as. A man who didn’t feel the pain he had to go through, or the pain he had to persevere and endure to be the man he became.
Then Dean, who always expected to keep Sam safe and to not fail anyone. The insecurities he felt, the need to put on a facade. He tried to fool everyone into thinking, he was much like his dad though Dean was just a man, who didn’t know who he really was. Dean questioned his life, his actions and his decisions. He never felt like his life mattered, the only thing that made sense to him was, hunting monsters, guns blazing and protecting Sam.
So when I say these boys were heroes, there are a lot more to it them than just that word. These boys did not only fight actual demons, they fought their own too. They had their fair share of fights on the actual battlefield, but they also had their fair share of battles with their own minds. With their own self-worth, struggling to find their place in the world. A world that was a lot darker to them, than to most.
They were told they were crazy, that they had lost their minds, whenever they were forced into telling anyone, what they did for a living. Hell, sometimes they questioned themselves if they might have gone crazy. These boys experienced more in their lives than you, or anyone, could ever imagine. But they learned to be proud. To be proud of each other despite their differences and things they had gone through. And I promise you, they would have been damn proud of you, Daisy.
You looked down at your daughter, her eyes were shut tight and she was snuggled up closely to you. Small noises were coming from her sleeping posture, as a smile played on your lips. “He would be damn proud,” you whispered lowly.
