“Butterfly.”

“But..Butter.. fly.”

“Good!” You clap into your hands, a bright grin on your face as the man in front of you repeats your words.

He's introduced himself as Javier, someone who you learnt to have a lot in common with. Javier's not that experienced with English and his first words to the gang and you were clumsy to say the least. But you actually start to care for him more than you should, having taken the role as teacher upon yourself to teach him basic English.

Hosea did do the more complex things with him while you were there to do the other stuff.

Javier himself actually starts to like you more and more. He's been giving you some signals to show how much he cares for you, like the grinning he's been reserving for special ladies in his life or that winking his friends back in Mexico showed him to be flirtatious.

None of it seems to reach your end as a confession.

Soon he's trying to find out what American women really find attractive, which includes changing his style. Of course he keeps the Mexican touch, but as soon as he's a bit better at English he's confident enough to try and win you over.

Confident as in the most awkward he's ever been. Javier isn't a romantic, he just thinks he is. All Mexicans win the white women over with their seductiveness so of course he can do that too! No, Javier. No, you can't.

Soon he's out and about with the gang, helping with robberies and heists that leave him with many goods he thought of gifting you. Before he does so, Javier asks Hosea on how to proceed since the older man already had over twenty years of marriage under his belt at this point of time, even if his wife – Bessie– was already dead for a few years.

“Just be yourself, son.” He had said with a firm hand on Javier's shoulder. “She'll love anything you give her.”

After his reassurance he did just that, trying to form a few words in his head that he had tried to memorize.

As soon as he sees you, Javier's calling for you in that sweet accent you've grown to find rather adorable. When he does stand in front of you all the confidence seems to fade, causing him to just stand there like a little kid trying to confess to something he did.

But you understand. Understand what he was trying to tell you. Hell, you always understand everything and anything.. except his feelings for you.

“Oh, you didn't have to.” You smile brighter than the sun could ever shine down upon him, catching him in the most unusual way possible.

“Uhm..” He starts, visibly red. “I-I.. I thinked.. of.. you.” His mind goes over the words again and tries to correct them. “..think of you. I think of you.”

All the while you just stand there, all smiley and proud of him. That's the furthest he's come to fluently reciting more than two words. You don't try to correct him on the pronunciation and just put on the ring he had gotten you, the silver stone shimmering in the afternoon sun.

“I made some grilled fish with the girls.” You point to one of the smaller fires, where no pot was dangling over it, but rather a few sticks of fish. “Would you like some?”

How can he say no? Javier smiles and nods, letting himself be dragged after you to where everything was already smelling way better than Pearson's stew. Everyone's always commenting how skinny he is, something he's grown used to ever since Dutch found him while stealing a chicken he himself wanted as well.

You were one of these people as well, but you kept it rather sweet and concerning, even giving him seconds when no one else is looking. It felt strangely domestic in a way, something his other ladies back in Mexico didn't do for him.

So he's just sitting there, feasting on the best fish he's ever eaten, eyes trained on you as you talk about your day in a tone that was meant for him as well. A tone with pronounced words that made him understand nearly every single word.

“And you, Javier? How was your day?”

You've asked him that question more times than he could count. Everytime he just smiles and nods, but today he tries.

“G-Good. Day was.. good. Lots.. uhm..” He taps against his head for a word that fits what he was trying to say.

“.. money?” You quietly say.

Javier nods.

“That's amazing, Javi!” You laugh and he can't help laughing too.

Soon you are full with fish and he's strumming his guitar. Just for you. All for you. He's singing to you, making you smile was the best kind of medicine for his homesickness.

Maybe one day when he's a little more confident with his words he'll be able to convey them to you just the way he does with his songs. Full of love. Pure.

Because Javier Escuella finally has realized this isn't just something small. No. He loves you, because you see something in him that isn't something to give up.

As soon everyone's asleep he's singing it for you, translating anything you don't understand.

Your insecurity becomes clear to him when he finds you crying further away from camp after Grimshaw yelled at you. She's been saying nasty stuff, mostly about your looks and you being lazy. That's the first time he's protected you from someone who's not a man. He returns the nasty stuff on your behalf, doubling down even more.

Once he found you he's not letting you go, his voice repeating loving words in any language you prefer, kissing your tears away and promising things you know he couldn't always keep.

If you're more confident but still a little shy he doesn't mind asking other for anything you need, only of it's not always happening. Yes, the time you're living in wants women to always keep at their men's sides but Javier wants you to be the best version of yourself even if it means you ‘leaving the nest.’
