Shep: Born in 1871 (28 in 1899) to a Mexican mother and a Scottish immigrant father just outside Armadillo. He has a little brother named Casey who he became the ward of after their parent’s passing. Out of the two brothers, Shep can understand and speak some Spanish because he actually got to know their mother, although their mother didn’t speak it often. He holds more of his father’s accent in English, but it’s still a weird little mix. In the gang he was a gunman and driver, and because he was good with wagons, he often fixed up whatever they stole for cash, too.

Casey: Born in 1889 (7 in 1896), and Shep’s younger brother. Because Shep is nearly 20 years older than him, he’s often mistaken as Shep’s son, which Shep has in fact taken advantage of for pity points several times. Although, as Casey got older, he began correcting people that Shep was his brother so they had to stop doing that. Casey is far less interested in the wagon/stagecoach shit Shep does, believing it to be extremely boring, but he does like to hang around Shep and talk away about other things.

Alonzo Hearse: Born in 1841 (55 in 1896) in what is basically Tumbleweed. Leader of a small, unstructured gang of highwaymen (known by lawmen and papers as the Great Plains Highwaymen). He cares for Shep and Casey, but in no way thinks of himself as their father-figure. In fact, he loathes the idea that he’s *responsible* for anyone but himself. His “every man for himself” approach to leading the gang outside of specific jobs makes things feel unstructured and loose, but his belief is that the less you tie yourself down, the more opportunity you have to get out if things go wrong.

Ximena Perez: Born in 1839 (57 in 1896) in Casa Madrugada. She travels between Casa Madrugada and Thieves Landing often, and due to her history with navigating such lawless areas, is a priceless source of information for jobs, targets, and gang alliances for the highwaymen. She is much gentler than Alonzo is when it comes to the “every man for himself” thing, but that is still a belief she holds. She is very fond of Shep in particular, even playfully giving him the nickname ‘Corderito’, and will listen to his recommendations for jobs with more weight than Alonzo might.

I don't think Earl has ever been in a relationship before. As a young man, he was certainly more interested in working and hunting instead of maintaining a relationship. His family meant everything to him, so he always put them first. He quietly admired the occasional lass but never made a move, thinking it was useless anyway, and flirtations probably went over his head more often than not.

Later in life, hardly anything changed. The few times he was interested in women, he soon abandoned any hopes whenever he realised the attraction wasn't mutual, but he never acted mean or unfair towards any of them. If anything, he always felt a little ashamed for having had even the slightest bit of hope. He knows (or thinks) he's not a lot of women's type and he's fine with that since he is 100% content with himself

Now, with Irene, he developed a crush rather fast after spending some time with her. What he feels for her is more than mere attraction but the deep desire to see her happy and help her with that, whatever it costs. However, since he does not want to ruin their friendship, he keeps his romantic feelings to himself. He also thinks that she's so far out of his league that, even though he does not deem her shallow, he simply cannot be enough for her.

Irene's experiences with men so far have been rather discouraging. Already as a young woman they considered her too loud, bossy, and overall tomboyish, and she was often told that she was too tall to be attractive to a man. Her father raised her to be independent and proud of who she is, and men who couldn't handle her simply weren't worth the trouble.

A few years from where the story sets in, she was in a relationship with a guy with whom she's still in contact, as he's part of the same criminal network as her and her brother. While he treated her with respect, she found his general personality unfavourable and ended their relationship. To this day, the guy [whose name I shall come up with eventually] is still a bit salty about that and wants to win her back, but she's good at keeping him at bay.

When she met Earl and got to know him better, she developed a fondness for him that also soon turned into a crush. Still, she doubts that they could ever be more than friends, fearing that she might not be what he likes in a woman. She thus also refuses to tell him how she really feels, afraid that if it ever came out she would not be able to deal with the rejection.
