Regional Coordinator Article - August - September 2025
From Jay Friedlander, RC9
It has been an eventful summer in Mensa, which included a successful AG, chaired by Karen Gruebele and Allison Reeves. Recruiting Ken Jennings as gala dinner speaker was a coup, and Ken was mentioned by many as one of the most engaging and entertaining speakers we’ve ever had. Congratulations to Jon Gruebele as the new Chair of American Mensa, succeeding Lori Norris, whose efforts on behalf of Mensa for many years are greatly appreciated. Tabby Vos moves up to replace Jon as 1st Vice Chair. By the time you read this, her former 2nd Vice Chair position will have been filled by a very qualified successor. And it’s expected that we will also have a new Regional Coordinator for Region 8, our neighbor to the north, replacing Dan Burg, who has taken a position on Mensa International’s Constitutions Review Committee. Dan will continue to chair AML’s Bylaws Committee. After the lawsuit filed by former AMC officers was dismissed by the Supreme Court of the State of New York, the postponed RVC special election will resume in the near future. The positions of Regional Young Adult M’s Coordinator, Regional Gifted Youth Coordinator and Regional Webmaster will soon be posted in the Volunteer Marketplace, and I’m looking forward to hearing from interested volunteers. I’m hoping for a greater regional presence for Region 9 at next year’s AG. Where High Potential Turns Into Real-World Impact
The Knowledge Society (TKS) is a global program for students (ages 13–17) who want to go beyond academics and start building the future. At TKS, students aren’t just learning about innovation — they’re doing it. They take on real-world challenges in fields like AI, biotech, and climate tech. They learn directly from experts at companies like Google and SpaceX. And they join a global community of young people who want to grow, build, and make a real impact. www.tks.world

Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa
Focus is on new events in East Los Angeles County, coordinated by Secretary Anrey Wang and Delegate Kato Cooks. - Board Game Bash in Walnut: Joanne K hosted a brilliant gathering of 15 Mensans at her home in Walnut, CA, where we played a variety of party and tabletop games. For some, it was their first Mensa event, and for others, it was the first in-person event in many months or even years. Many in the east side of the LA Metro region have been yearning for more in-person events that are not burdened by long drives in traffic, and so we hope to continue to develop events like these and others in the area! - Second Saturdays in East L.A, Brunch at Native Fields, 18750 Amar Road, Walnut 91789 Beginning at 9 a.m. Outside if the weather invites. Look for the only tall, dark, bald fellow, conservatively attired (he's Käto Cooks). Diverse conversation, diverse dining with organic, locally sourced vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore options. Non-members welcome. Monthly. RSVP to Käto Cooks at [email protected] or text to 626.824.2774 so that we can save space for you.
- Kathleen Carter is hosting a casual pool party at her home in Claremont, 553 Occidental Drive. Bring your favorite snack and a beach chair if you’ve got one and join us any time between 2-8 PM for a relaxed backyard/patio gathering. All ages welcome. Plates, utensils, and ice will be provided. Region 9 Coordinator Article
Hi Region 9,
My name is Jay Friedlander, and I’m the new Regional Coordinator for Region 9. This is a non-voting bridge position leading up to the RVC elections in April, for which I am also a candidate. I was a 12-year Ombudsman for Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa. On that note, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Eldon Romney of Utah Mensa as our new Regional Ombudsman. Eldon brings ten years of experience as our National Ombudsman, and is an American Mensa Distinguished Service Award winner. I’m excited to work with Eldon going forward. I am also GLAAM’s outgoing RG Chair (with Madeline Walker), and our chapter just completed another enjoyable and successful Regional Gathering. Looking forward to San Diego Mensa’s RG over their traditional Memorial Day weekend. Are you looking to get RG’s started in your chapter again? I’m happy to advise, and share what I’ve learned over twenty years on our RG committee. Some advice on starting local events? As the co-founder, more than twenty years ago, of the International Diners Club (with Danielle Hanne), which is still ongoing today, I am happy to advise there as well. One important mission of American Mensa is to bring in new members and young members to pass the torch and carry on Mensa’s great traditions. GLAAM just appointed their new Young Adult M’s coordinator, and hopefully in time, all our chapters will find the right candidates to lead those efforts. And about that RVC election? We are currently in the petition process to place candidates on the ballot for the full time RVC 9 position. If you would like to see voting representation on the AMC board for Region 9 again, I hope you will sign my petition, so I can appear on the ballot, along with any other candidates who might step forward. You can follow the path at Us.Mensa.org to Elections underneath the LEAD tab > Board of Directors (AMC). Or you can go to this direct link. https://www.us.mensa.org/lead/amc/elections/candidate-petitions/petition-signatures/?id=D8918BC8-2A67-4152-A223BF8DDFDE7643 Thank you, Jay Friedlander Regional Coordinator - Region 9 [email protected]
