PONTIAC GTO CONCEPT (1998)
A conclusione dello scorso millennio, l'americana Pontiac decise di omaggiare uno dei suoi modelli più leggendari, ovvero la GTO (celeberrima tra gli anni '60 e '70), con una concept molto appariscente quanto inconcreta.
La vettura venne realizzata in appena quattro mesi durante l'autunno del 1998 ed infatti era priva di meccanica ed interni: si presentava dunque come un mero mock-up.
Nonostante si trattasse di uno scheletro non mancava di originalità: il centro stile di General Motors, capitanato da Wayne Cherry, oltre che omaggiare la muscle car del passato, tentava di creare delle linee guida per il marchio nei successivi 15 anni (purtroppo sappiamo quanto male sia andata a Pontiac...).
Progettata interamente al computer, la vettura si caratterizzava per linee taglienti e muscolose, oltre che a dir poco peculiari. Il frontale era dominato da un elemento a "V" ai cui lati trovavano posto due enormi scavi neri con quello di destra integrante il lettering "GTO", mentre più in basso trovava posto la fanaleria, generosa e circolare, mentre ai lati tre fregi a contrasto graffiavano il paraurti, con questi elementi che visivamente proseguivano sulla fiancata celando parzialmente una grossa feritoia.
Molto movimentato il cofano, aperto da due prese d'aria molto massicce: la vista laterale, con una citazione alla GTO originale, presentava la peculiare forma Coke Bottle Look, che le donava una linea sinuosa e sportiva.
Molto regolare la coda, troncata di netto, e caratterizzata da una fanaleria a tutta larghezza e dalla targa posta centralmente incorniciata da uno smusso negativo.
Presentata al NAIAS, la GTO Concept ha rappresentato un interessante tentativo della casa americana di dare un futuro dignitoso ad una vettura leggendaria, salvo poi tornare sui propri passi presentando una versione ricarrozzata della Vauxhall Monaro, un'anonima coupè.
