So like y'all remember Candyland right? The game that was stupid easy to play as a kid 'cause it was made to be like... one of the first board game kids play? Obviously it got revisions over the years but like... what the fuck happened between the years 2010 and 2021? This is going to be a long post but I NEED to drag y'all through the shit I've seen.
For context lets go back in to like... the original, apparently this was done by Milton Bradley before Hasbro yoinked that company up in the 80s
Now see something odd? No characters at all besides the goober looking 40s kids at the start, which kinda shocked me because like Candyland IS all about the characters in my mind right? Like where's Gramma Nut? Where's the glop monster? Where's the freaky licorice Waluigi looking fucker? Where's everyone's favorite clown twink Mr. Mint? (Who I learned while going down this deep dive has a Sexypedia page because of course he does.)
Well apparently that was the 80s edition when Hasbro took over completely (I'm largely skipping the editions from the 40s to the 70s they're all... basically the same, minus shifts in artstyle and honestly some are like really neat to look at but in particular I do want to point out the realistic kids from the 78 version and this weirdly content looking gingerbread man from the gingerbread plum tree)
ANYWAY the 80s, Hasbro pumps out the 84 revision of Candyland and like... now we're cooking with gas 'cause it introduces the main thing folks remember these games for: the characters... (also they used the same designs just with updated looks for the 99 revision with Lord Licorice looking more like a fruity twink with too much free time and a love for renfairs and Mr. Mint with less thoughts in that empty empty head.)
Look you've got the classic funny guys of Mr. Mint, Queen Frostine, Lord Licorice, Gramma Nutt, Jolly, PLUMPY LIKE THEY GOT PLUMPY IN THIS ONE LIKE WHERE ELSE IS PLUMPY!? PLUMPY IS JUST GONE AFTER THE 90s
Like I'm pretty sure Plumpy died and his whole species went extinct, like... do you think Plumpy thought about the coming end as the last plums fell from the tree? The last calls of the wild Plumpa Troll filling the Gingerbread Plum Tree forest like the final calls of the KauaŹ»i Ź»ÅŹ»Å? Poor fucking bastard.
Now after the 99 edition was made Hasbro realized "Oh shit it's the 50th anniversary of Candyland and also the turn of the millennium what do we do? WE MAKE A RETRO STYLED VERSION OF CANDYLAND WITH RETRO DESIGNS FOR OUR GUYS"
Take it in folks, this is the last time you'll ever see Plumpy.
Anyway so like the 90s went and passed and along with many MANY things happening Candyland got a revision, IN THE MAGNIFICENT FAR OFF YEAR OF 2002 where we got this absolute classic of a board... that'd grace kindergartens and afterschool facilities all over the world...
They took Plumpy out back and Old Yeller'ed the poor bastard and replaced him with Mama Gingertree who also just... didn't show up in the next edition. (We'll get to that edition in a bit, they for some reason also got rid of Mr. Mint and that baffled me)
So anyway yeah, classic 2000s art style, everyone's so round and friendly looking, Mr. Mint is more of a twink although I do miss the pink outfit 'cause that shit kinda went hard, and Lord Licorice got Hey Arnold syndrome going on. Also look at Gloppy... he's so frien shapped now... my boy Glop...
A side note: there was a direct to DVD animated movie based on this version and I can't tell you shit about it but the main image for Mr. Mint on the tumblr sexyman wiki is this fucker
So y'know. Exactly what you expect.
So what if I told you that in 2010 they made a new version and tried to kill Mr. Mint, demoted Gloppy and made some random dude named "Duke of Swirl" just sorta be there.
Look at Lord Licorice getting into his pirate theme he'll keep for the rest of the series, Gramma Gooey replacing Gramma Nutt (both sound. so bad these days), Lolly having that 2000s wide head look that fairies had at the time, Gloppy being demoted to a background character, the Duke of Swirl... being the Duke of Swirl.
Naturally people were pissed that Mr. Mint was gone, and so... come 2013 Hasbro decided to try another shot at the whole Candyland thing with:
THE MOST BUSIEST BOARD GAME I'VE EVER SEEN GOOD LORD. Seriously look at all the colors, all the smiles that come straight out of a maplestory mob, whatever the hell is happening with Mr. Mint down there (I really hate his chin.) LORD LICORICE REALLY GETTING INTO THE PIRATE THING LIKE LOOK HIM GOOD FOR YOU BUD HONESTLY.
So naturally this edition got slammed by Candyland hardcore fans and Hasbro sprinted to make a new version 2014 which uh... good fucking lord some choices were made
LOOK AT WHAT THEY DID TO LORD LICORICE, HE'S SO GRODY NOW, also damn Mr. Mint you're looking more... Link each passing day, and like Gramma Nutt decided that the name was too weird sounding so she goes by Nana Nutt now. This is the last time you'll ever see Nana Nutt. RIP to a legend...
Anyway so like... they also killed Lord Licorice in the final edition so far, the 2021 revision
Which honestly? I think I hate this one the most because it's got that like "Sanitized Kids Aisle" art style in full force. Like the designs aren't the worst, and it's rad to see representation for a product geared towards 3 years olds but also like... the faces wig me out so bad. It's the detailed cheeks, the dead eyes, the like... plasticine smiles.
Everyone looks dead and Hasbro brought the corpses of those who fit the most in with the current look and propped them up on stands and forced them to forever wave their cold dead hands at passerbys like some sick twisted attraction. It's fucked.
Also I can't get over the fact they just brought back Jolly for the first time in almost a decade and like... just made him a normal ass man.
I could go on about the VCR game, the PC game, and a few other oddities but honestly I think my body is having a negative reaction to Candyland now so I'll leave that for a part 2 if folks want to send me to the candy mines again (don't send me to the candy mines again I beg of you)
