“齋田記念館の母体である齋田家は、この地世田谷代田に続く旧家で、明治期には広大な茶園を造営して製茶業で栄えました。明治期、政府が茶の輸出を奨励したこともあり、各地で茶の生産・輸出が行われ、その輸出用茶箱に貼るラベルは「蘭字」と呼ばれ、商品価値を高めるために、カラフルに彩られ、海外の人々の心をとらえる魅力的なデザインが工夫されました。2013年に和食がユネスコの無形文化遺産に登録されたこともあり、近年、日本の伝統的な茶文化への注目も高まっております。そこで、当館では、齋田家がまさに茶業をしていた明治期を中心に、その輸出茶ラベルすなわち「蘭字」をテーマに特別展を開催します。見た目も鮮やかな「蘭字」を楽しみながら、日本茶の歴史にふれ、あわせてかつてこの地に齋田家の広大な茶園があったことを知っていただく機会となりましたら幸いでございます。”
