I can’t help seeing Stede Bonnet as a basic, sheltered, suburban, upper class dad, who did what the world asked of him: got married, had a couple of kids and tried his hardest to hide the fact that he’s gay, even from himself. He keeps telling himself he’s happy, that this is what he’s supposed to do with his life. Keeps telling himself he’s attracted to women.
Then, when he breaks away from the suffocating (if well meaning) embrace of his suburban family, and makes his way into the world, doing something he’s always dreamed of doing, (even if he’s very bad at it) he still can’t quite admit to himself that he’s deeply attracted to men.
Until of course he sees Ed for the first time. Sees that leather clad swagger and that long, rippling hair and handsome face. Men don’t look like this where Stede comes from. They look perfumed and powdered, quaffed and bewigged. They look soft and pampered. Meanwhile, Ed looks like some sort of feral jungle cat who could rip Stede’s face off if he’s not careful and he is INCREDIBLY TURNED ON BY THIS.
Ed is the motorbike riding, death metal listening, pot smoking, crime doing bad boy that Stede has very carefully fantasized about in his most private moments, and the minute he sees Ed, he’s a gonner. Just massively in love from day one. From moment one. All of a sudden he realizes that he’s very, very gay and newly in love with an infamous pirate captain. The sheltered suburban dad falls for the ex con leader of a biker gang. How perfect is that?
What if like .. like really like.. a glitch in the matrix happens and somehow I end up waking up an hour earlier than I should. I mean just imagine the possibilities, just sit down and imagine with me all the potential of self development and character development I’m gonna have. I mean I could be the next Oprah Winfrey for all I know. Waking up, drinking something warm, reflecting, reading an article, and not having to run like a chicken with its head cut-off to catch your 8am work. People who do that go straight to heaven and I’m rooting for them, along with people who go for morning runs. Wild, just wild.
