Serious answer? Still Jeje. He has spent YEARS upon YEARS dealing with Mikuni’s bullshit. Okay so. Mahisono is one of those ships where it’s like. No matter how platonic you intend to write it, because of the way their relationship is structured, it always reads like a saccharinely sweet teenage romance, complete with handholding, awkward firsts, and happy, slightly self conscious blushes.

This is absolutely due to just… How genuinely sweet both Mahiru and Misono are!! Mahiru is the boy next door and Misono is the sheltered little prince and that dynamic makes their interactions so fun and cute. The clashing of their different worlds is extremely fun to think about, especially in the context of Mahiru introducing a suddenly shy Misono to his normal friends (Mahiru teases him and gets hit with a punch that feels like absolutely nothing) and Mahiru accompanying Misono to business get together a as a plus one (it’s both intimidating and cool to see Misono so in his element, and also he and Lily talk like mean girls it’s hilarious)

Underneath all that sugar and fluff though there’s… A bittersweet understanding, between the two of them. The way they grew up might have been extremely different just from a basic point of view, but their origins? Children born to women out of wedlock, the perceived idea that maybe they are the cause for their mothers coming to ruin, the comfort to be taken in loving each other that doesn’t come with that emotional baggage… Being able to speak frankly of what they do and don’t understand. It’s like they did a speed run of childhood friends to lovers lmao. With their comfort level towards one another? It is VERY easy to mistake them as having known each other for much longer than they do.

Not to mention Misono being raised in a very… Westernized household, I suppose you could say it, plays nicely with Mahiru’s lack of boundaries stemming from how he craves acceptance and affection. If Misono says Mahiru deserves to have a family, that he sees Mahiru as PART of his family, well. Mahiru has no reason not to believe him.

What made you ship it? 

At first? Spite lmao. I didn’t like how in fanwork they were always butting heads in a way that was petty and jealous, even when they were part of the same OT3, so I started thinking about how that relationship might develop outside of the context of Mahiru being glue. You can’t have a poly relationship with the same person if two members are always at one another’s throats!

Well, I mean, you can, but that’s not the way I see this going down for them. In the words of a very wise man.

What are your favorite things about the ship? 

The growth. The potential for maturation, and change for the better. Of Sakuya learning to trust someone other than his “safe person,” and Kuro reaching out his hand because he really does want to know him better! Learning each other’s stories, where they’re different and where they’re alike. Sakuya coming to realize that Kuro... Is more like him than he thought. Scared. Lost. Lonely. The type who blames himself and runs away and really, really needs a hug. How angry Kuro was on his behalf, and that the Servamp of Sloth... Is not the man he thought he was. That Kuro is hurting, just like him, and could really use a friend.

And, later on, many, many years later... Supporting each other through the inevitable.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? 

Listen. Listen listen listen. I get the appeal of possessive Kuro. I really do. Yandere is one of my favorite character tropes, and that’s like. Possessive pushed to the extreme. Kuro? Is not that.

Would they fight a lot? Yeah, at first. But something I feel that gets ignored a lot for this ship? Kuro is a big brother. He’s also a huge pushover, honestly, and he’s used to fish way bigger than Sakuya lashing out at him. He’s clumsy and awkward, but he does try and connect with him once he realizes what’s going on! And it’s Kuro’s ability to take a step back and think ‘why is this happening’ that makes them work as a solo ship. Sakuya is really just... Desperate to be loved, I think. And it makes him skittish.

Kuro would not bait him, even if he might initially respond to Sakuya’s own bait. Instead he’d approach him like you would a cat! Chill out in the same space and wait for Sakuya to come to him. He thinks Tsubaki is kind of an idiot for not doing that in the first place lol. Gotta socialize him properly. He regrets to inform you that Sakuya is not nearly food motivated enough to tempt with treats so it has to happen the hard way. Can’t buy his love www.

All this rambling just to say: They can work without Mahiru there.

Answering these both at once since there's an overlap!

Lily/Misono: Knight and Prince ship that I love to pieces because hooooly shit, that panel of Lily kneeling before Misono in the present compared to how he stood before him in the past... So good? Also, I will never be over that one shot in the extra chapter about the doors where Lily is gripping the edge of Misono's shirt like a scared little child, subtly showing that despite his grown up appearance, Lily really is just that on the inside. A frightened kid who's been hurt so much he doesn't want to or really know how to try anything new, scared of the unknown world beyond that door, beyond their safe, secret garden. They're a powerful duo in terms of how their story and characters are handled.

Jekuni: Co-dependent terrible bastards who scratch my itch for blasphemy and being pretentious in a religious flavoured way. This ship makes it worth being raised Southern Baptist.
