I like to think that post canon Random Dent would get really into music. Specifically, really into Earth music.
There’s a great throughline theme of preservation in the later books, especially in So Long And Thanks (coinciding with Douglas Adams being a huge advocate for preserving endangered species later in his career/procrastination), and when Random asks Arthur about the Earth, he’s more than happy to share because this is the life he wants nothing more than to talk about. He wants to share the things he loves and the things he took for granted. Something as infinitesimal and mundane as a digital watch is still a complicated piece of technology, and it’s what inspires Random to learn more about this entire planetary culture she never got the chance to grow up in.
So to me, something as small as hearing her father humming The Yellow Submarine, or stealing Ford’s bag to figure out how his stolen Walkman and cassette tapes work to listen to Elvis Presley, or asking Trillian what Mandinka is after listening to Sinead O’Conner, or getting a half-assed ajuitar lesson from Zaphod—it all means getting back something she never got the chance to have
