Happy birthday Chavela Vargas!

Singer Chavela Vargas was born on 17 April in 1919 in Costa Rica. She moved to Mexico at 17, and began a career putting a lesbian spin on traditional Mexican music, first busking and singing in bars, and eventually touring throughout Mexico, North American and Europe.

Chavela came out publicly as a lesbian when she was 81, and debuted at Carnegie Hall two years later.
