Still We Rise - Harmonia Rosales (2021)
Info:
By directly restructuring Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment, Rosales replaces a canonical Western vision of religious salvation and damnation with a monument to the African diaspora, layering it with profound visual metaphors. It visualizes the historical reality of earthly trauma, specifically the horrors of American chattel slavery depicted at the bottom. Every black figure in the painting is crowned with a vibrant gold halo. By placing halos on the survivors and the African deities alike, she shows that black ancestors are fundamentally divine, choosing to celebrate their inherent grace, strength, and beauty.

Snakes as representations of evil and Satan? Boo!
Snakes as representations of rebirth, healing/medicine, and the Goddess of Creation? Fuck yeah!

Shout out to Fright Krewe for its positive and accurate portrayal of voodoo and especially in its use of serpents on the side of good.
