Raijin - 雷神
The kami of thunder and lightning, almost always opposite his brother Fūjin, kami of wind. With his thunderous drums he produces storms and, in the modern day, kids are told he will steal them if they don't cover their bellybuttons during a thunderstorm. Typically he is born of the goddess Izanami after Izanagi flees from her corpselike form, chasing after him in a flurry of other demons and escaping the cave before he seals it. He is sometimes accompanied by a lightning dog (raijū) or his son named Raitarō. Some legends say he drove off the Mongols from invading Japan or that he was captured by the goddess Kannon for an emperor. He may derive from the Vedic god Varuna.
