I'm someone who likes predictability.

Not schedules. Not routines.

People.

I like feeling like I understand the people around me. I like knowing how they'll react, what they'll say, what they'll choose when life gets difficult.

Why?

Maybe because it gives me a sense of safety.

But lately I've realized something uncomfortable.

Even the people closest to us aren't as predictable as we think. You can know someone for years and still be surprised by them.

Your best friend can make a choice you never expected. Your sibling can react in a way that doesn't match the person you've always known. Your parent who always understands you can suddenly be on a very different page.

Strange right?

Someone who seems brave can avoid.

Someone who seems emotional can shut down.

Someone who always speaks their mind can suddenly choose silence.

And maybe that's where disappointment sometimes comes from.

Not because people change. But because we become attached to our expectations of them. We build stories around who they are. We think we know what they would do. Then life puts them in a situation we've never seen before, and they reveal a side of themselves we didn't know existed.

I used to think knowing someone meant being able to predict them.

Now I think knowing someone means accepting that you'll never know them completely. There will always be parts of people that only reveal themselves when life asks something difficult of them.

And maybe that's true for us, too. Maybe that's how we surprise the people around us the most.

By an opinion they never expected for us to share.

By a reaction they never expected us to have.

By a thought that, when said out loud, makes them doubt if they ever really even knew us at all.

Maybe that's why expectations can be so dangerous.
