Listening Center - Now, Beyond The Dream
Now, Beyond The Dream is the third album by Listening Center in the SX-70 CD-R series by Temporary Tapes. It represents the end of a phase of open ended exploration of modular and polysynth improvisations recorded around 2020. Elements of arabesque and isorhythm have again been widely employed to create a cyclical and disembodied feeling. In "New Riddles", a modular sequence is tape looped over and over itself, creating a pulsing, protozoan echo. No matter how much narrative or abstraction is projected onto the work after the fact, it always contains a diaristic element of some kind—it can often be a response to or processing of physical or mental events of the time. Again, the idea of "a dream of sound" (Southam). Sometimes it seems appropriate to use another approach. The well-trodden paths that have served us well now seem to lead nowhere. Less familiar paths can still lead home. Recorded NY, 2020 David Mason - Modular and Polyphonic Synthesizers, Tape Loops.
I never once advertised them when I was actually making them, so maybe I should actually tell people about them now that they're a complete set
I made three albums and one EP of dark ambient music! If you want stuff that sounds like Eraserhead or QUAKE or the unsettling sound design of 1960s Doctor Who, give this a try!
After Game Over is a concept album about a video game NPC and her listless wandering through the dead world of the game decades after the player ragequit and threw the cartridge in their attic, never to be played again.
transfem stereotype is my first full album, named after the fact that a trans girl making experimental noise albums is not exactly breaking the mould lmao
Cutting Room Symphony is a continuous EP, intended more as a long background drone than the more sound design-y-ness of the albums. Sadly I don't have enough sales to unlock the ability to upload the full, unbroken 45 minute version, so it is currently split into three 15 minute tracks instead.
Volumeluminous is my new album, and probably my last as I feel like I've made as much as I want to make, and I'd rather end things when it feels like I've made a complete discography to be proud of rather than burning myself out churning out more and more samey stuff.
If you know anyone who would be into lowkey experimental dark ambient soundscapes, please do tell them about me!
