we should know too well by now that neither safe nor careful was in the boy’s dictionary; silver singed black and sporting angry burns on arms, on legs. knows he could’ve avoided half of them by doing anything other than nothing in the fire; knows he could’ve come out unscathed if he wanted to but we know this, know that the boy likes being a thing scarred just a little too much.
so he stands in burning rooms, lets wooden beams scratch legs, reaches out to touch fire just to say he has. says he wanted a warmth, wanted to see if it was worth holding. wanted to know what a burning felt like, figured that he should get used to one should a hell exist just for him.
(a selfish thing, even for this)
“‘m fine, stop - “ he’s mumbling, lazy hands brushing off the other’s, eyes unfocused when they turn to them, as if still looking through smoke. “‘ve been through worse, you know this. probably been there with me too, no?” he manages a half-grin, half-missing.
“didn’t really think i was gonna die in there, did you? promise you ‘m not that easy to get rid of.”
