" Okay....how do I look?"
Taunie steps out from the curtain, the suit she's wearing glistening slightly in the light. It feels so weird, without her mom's jacket. Its like she's walking out naked, which feels especially bad when Sheryl eyes her up and down, taking in her new look. Taunie tries not to blush.
" Fancy." Sheryl says after a hum, giving Taunie a small encouraging smile. Taunie groans, slumping forward.
" I know! Its so weird...." she huffs, pulling at her collar. Sheryl chuckles softly, shaking her head.
" Well, you're going to have to put up with it tonight. It is your first gala as a CEO," Sheryl says as she walks over to Taunie, and the girl can't help but tense up again when Sheryl's hands reach over for her tie. Its only now she notices its loose. Whoops.
" Y-yeah..." Taunie croaks out, hoping her nervousness wasn't obvious. It felt like ages since the two of them really stood beside each other, let alone being this close. Sheryl was usually so hesitant when it came to that. Maybe...maybe she wasn't mad at her anymore? Arceus, she hopes so.
" I....You didn't have to come," Taunie starts without thinking. Sheryl stops doing her tie to look up at her. There's a familiar look of hurt in her eyes, and Taunie stops herself from cursing out loud.
" I mean! I want you here!" She stumbles, hoping to rectify her blunder, " But you...you didn't have to,"
Sheryl only looks at her, her eyes betraying nothing. Just when Taunie thinks she messed up again, Sherly looks down and tightens her tie. Taunie almost flinches at how swift it was.
" Of course I want to be here," she says simply, then looks back up at Taunie, " Why wouldn't I?"
And why wouldn't she? After everything they've been through? The first look of betrayal when Taunie decided to take up after her grandmother. The fear and relief when she saw Taunie was alive and okay after being on Ange. That distant smile whenever they would meet afterwards. Why wouldn't she? Isn't it so obvious.
Taunie decides not to comment on it.
" I...." she starts, remembering how bare she feels right now. How Sheryl is still holding the tie. How she's just about to go to a Gala as proof of her newfound position. How close they are. Its all so much, " I don't know. I'm just nervous."
Sheryl's eyes widen," You? Nervous?"
" Y-yeah," Taunie laughs, " It's silly isn't it?"
" Not at all!" Sheryl shakes her head, letting go of the tie, " Its only natural to be..." she pauses, biting her lip," Are....you alright?"
Taunie swears not to cry. She never cried then and she's not going to cry now. Not in front of Sheryl anyway.
" .....It's all been happening so fast," she says, her voice wavering, " It's hard to keep up, you know?"
When she looks at Sheryl's eyes, she finds them no longer unreadable, but soft and understanding and sympathetic, and a wave of warmth washed over her all at once.
" Taunie...." she whispers, as if they weren't the only ones in the room. As if they aren't so close, " I'm...I'm sorry-"
" WE'RE BAAAAAAAACKKKK!" Lida's voice booms through the room, accompanied by Naveen's " do you have to say it like that?", to which Lida promptly ignores, " And we got your dress, Sher!"
The closeness that the two girls once shared was immediately snuffed one, two, three spaces as Sheryl immediately put some distance between the two. If Taunie wasn't so shocked, she would have been disappointed.
" Lida! Naveen! You're back! " Taunie exclaims.
" Yes? Lida very loudly proclaimed that.." Naveen looks between Taunie and Sheryl, raising a brow, " Are we interrupting something?"
" NO!" they both exclaim, Taunie feeling her face flush red.
" Oh?" Lida looks between the two as well, before smiling, " Oooooh! We can always come back later-"
" No! " Sheryl's voice booms across the room as she power walks to Lida, grabbing her arm and drags her out the room. Lida merely giggles along, and Taunie can only here the two engage in some frantic whispery conversation as they rush out.
Naveen looks at the fleeing duo, then looks back at Taunie. She can only shrug.
" Hm." Was his reply, also looking Taunie up and down, " You need a moment?"
Taunie opens her mouth, closes it, and opens it again.
" Yeah, actually."
