“Thinking about quoiromantic symbology again.

I am… ambivalent, to say the least, about the multiple flag design proposals from the past ten years, but in spite of myself I kind of like the idea of turquoise (and/or the use of a blue-green gradient) as means of representing ambiguity. As a color, turquoise itself is inherently a blend of colors, straddling the line between blue and green. But it also adds another layer or two beyond the typical grayscale white-to-black gradient, in my mind, since you can also think about how turquoise is not just a color but also a stone – and whether a given stone is sky blue or a more ambiguous teal, every piece of turquoise is still “turquoise.” That’s a status that supersedes whatever specific color it “technically” is. In the same way, other factors are more important to me than the romantic/nonromantic distinction.

I put together this symbol using a Spiral by Alexander Skowalsky with the font Straight to Hell BB by Blambot, specifically combining the capital “Q” with a dot from the question mark, in order create a letter which could be read as both a “Q” and a “?” depending on how you look at it. The spiral, too, acts as a classic visual signifier of dizziness. Combined with the turquoise gradient, the Q-? overlaying the spiral represents ambiguity and questioning as well as disidentification and irrelevance.
