To adore Jesus at the transfiguration, to love God in great things, is not so perfect an act of faith as to worship them in small ones, to worship Jesus on the cross, since faith is only truly living when what is seen and felt, deny and try to destroy it. Perfect faith emerges from this battle with the senses strengthened and triumphant.

If philosophy is esoteric, that is not because a few men guard its knowledge, but because most men guard themselves against it.

Philosophy can neither destroy itself completely by its own means, nor ensure permanent quietude of thought. For, it has no say over its own future because it has no commanding control over history. And therefore, it cannot prevent problems being created at the volatile intersections of the different vocabularies thrown up by sociohistorical change.
