I think I want to start identifying as non binary but I feel like I'm too old to be thinking about it. I'm too old to be lying in bed wondering if I'm actually a man. I'm 27, I'm AFAB and in a relationship with a lesbian. What if she's not attracted to me if she finds out? We're both very kinky so finding someone who's as sexually compatible will be hard BC I live in a rural area 😭. I feel like I have so many queer friends that have known me for so long as a lesbian cis woman, they'd be confused if I came out. Also my job, I'm glad my girlfriend's name is androgynous because I can't be out as a lesbian at work. I definitely can't come out as non binary or trans either, I'll lose my job. The plan is to save up and move closer to the city eventually but I really can't afford it for a few more years.
What would you say to your friend if they were thinking of changing the way they identify?
You are never too old to find your identity. Old Queers who only found out about themselves lately are just as valid as those who are able to find themselves at a young age. You are also only 27. Yes that is older than me but that's not old in any way shape or form. Unless you are knees, somehow any age is too old for knees (that last sentence is a joke)
If she has been dating you for a while, changing your identity and pronounce shouldn't break things. Those items are flexible and though are used to define you they aren't you. I'm a large supporter and believer that labels are made to fit you, and NOT the other way around. At the end of the day they are adjectives to best describe how we as humans exist for one another. If you love each other then you love each other. Sure some things may change but life and relationships are about change.
Unfortunately I can't say much in regards to work. This shit stinks how hateful the world is and all we can do is keep fighting for a better world better for others and for ourselves.
You may have friends that see you as a cis lesbian, you being masc lesbian, enby lesbian, or even a straight up he/him lesbian should not change how they see you. You still love women and still identify with the community. Sure the flavor is a little strange and or spicy but that's still who you are. You still had whatever lesbian experiences that led you to where you are today.
I say based on how worried you are, you should start changing or otherwise experimenting but feel free to go at your own pace. No need to throw out or donate all of your old clothes but start by getting a few new outfits to replace the ones you either don't like or feel dysphoric in. You don't need to come out to everyone, maybe start with those closest to you. You don't need to think about Rome once every day, start with once a month (this last sentence is also a joke). Travel at your own pace. You can discover things slowly, figure out what things you like and what things you don't like.
Hopefully this helps. Hopefully you are able to get out of such a rural place soon.
