Quartz knew she was in trouble the moment Miss Azul narrowed her eyes like a cat about to pounce.

“I just find it fascinating,” Azul purred, standing at the foot of Quartz’s bed in her soft nightgown, arms folded with a smirk playing on her lips. “That someone who acts so defiant during the day curls up like a kitten the moment it’s bedtime.”

Quartz, halfway into her oversized hoodie and already buried under a mountain of plush pillows, pouted. “Can you not bully me right before I sleep? There are laws.”

“Oh, I assure you, dearest, I’m well within regulation.” Azul circled the bed like a sea witch circling her catch. “Shall I bring up the way you clung to my arm all day during the cruise, only to immediately claim I was ‘annoying’ when Jade walked by? Or perhaps the pout you did when I didn’t share my blueberry tart at dinner—”

“That was a very big blueberry tart,” Quartz grumbled, curling up defensively, cheeks heating. “And you offered to share with everyone else first—”

“I was saving the best for last.” Azul leaned down, her voice dipping low like silk on skin. “But little songbirds who peck at me all day don’t get treats. They get tucked in. And maybe... their cheeks pinched.”

Too late. Azul gently tugged the blankets around Quartz, then, with mischievous delight, pinched her cheek—just enough to elicit a squeaky whine.

“You’re evil,” Quartz muttered, voice muffled by blankets and betrayal.

Azul smiled, a private softness in her eyes now as she smoothed back a lock of Quartz’s messy hair. “Mm. So you’ve said. Yet here you are, letting the sea witch make you cozy.”

She leaned in, pressing a light kiss to Quartz’s temple.

“Goodnight, darling. Try not to dream about my blueberry tart, hmm?”
