Um, just found out P-Valley is back, or will be back shortly. Gotta put a pause on Dean and Sammy now 😩
I'm rewatching some episodes of pvalley because i heard about season 3 (yippee!!!) and FUCK i forgot how well do e this show is. The music, the settings, the themes, the writing. I only rewatched Mississippi's backstory episode and the next episode and wow.
Firstly, P Valley is the only show with a COVID storyline that doesn't bother me, mostly because it's consistent and truthful to the reality of it. Everyone in different places trying to stay afloat with the restrictions and possibility of closed ones dying. But also, the reality that some people didn't give a fuck at all, and how that can be a split reality to deal with. It also blended with the storyline rather than just being some redundant reminder of the trauma.
The way they explore the intersections of racism, sexism, abuse, and poverty within Mississippi's storyline will never fail to feel so uneasy, upset, and concerned all at the same time. The camerawork and her actress' acting performance really blend to make you invested in her stunted growth, even though it stays stunted af. Her inability to leave is so effectively frustrating, because you can completely understand why.
The relationship between Mercedes and Tee, both reflecting the damage of Mercedes' mom, but also Mercedes making the conscious decision to do better within her means is so powerful. Even though Mercedes is visibly happy that Tee chose Jackson/herself, she still chooses to hide her expression to make sure that Tee isn't influenced by Mercedes wishes in the slightest. I'm always gonna love a damaged but well meaning mother daughter relationship, and I'm happy Mercedes gets to enjoy that dynamic she didn't get to have with her own mother.
Last (but certainly not least!!), Lil Murda and Teak coming together in the moment of losing people who knew them the most, as their most whole selves, and choosing to seek comfort in eachother is so incredibly powerful it really brings me to tears. Love by Kendrick Lamar playing as they come together (pun intended) and go deeper into this beautiful relationship, this comforting connection they have persisting through what is the most awful and tragic thing to ever happen to them, just poetic. And maybe my favorite way the COVID theme was weaved into the season, because throughout that incredibly turbulent and scary, there were still these indescribable blinks of joy, connection, and hope every now and then.
Tldr: forgot how much i love P Valley, its so awesome in every way
