Pushboats, sometimes called flatboats, were a common form of transportation along the Guyandotte River in Logan County, West Virginia throughout the nineteenth & early twentieth centuries. They were flat-bottomed, rectangular crafts that traveled into Logan from as far as the Ohio River. This scene, from appx. 1885, was taken near Ferrellsburg, WV. Many early settlers first came to the area by flatboat, & the boats like this were also used to transport heavy freight. -F. Keith Davis Collection
