Got third dog permission from my landlord! Exciting progress!
I mean, I thought sheād say yes, I hoped so, and I had compelling arguments (probably overthought the whole thing...) but I am now one step closer to my new dog!
Discussions with the breeder are ongoing. She hasnāt settled her breeding plans for the next six months or so, though she has a couple of possibilities in consideration. The next thing she knows for sure is a repeat breeding sheāll do in early 2017, which I would actually be pretty excited to get a puppy from, as the earlier breeding produced some really nice dogs. Iāve seen a number of people post on the breed group and this breederās fb group about how helpful and stable those pups are turning out (and beautiful as well). But ideally I donāt want to wait that long...though I might, if nothing else as tempting comes along in the meantime.
There is a litter already on the ground, though, thatās a cross of this breeders own dogs and their offspring. The sire is a dog I met at her farm a few weeks ago (heās great) and the dam is a daughter of two of her other dogs. So a consolidation of the breeding choices of this person whose dogs I really like. I mentioned in an email that Iād be keeping my dog intact until at least 2, for health reasons, but since Iām doing that anyway Iām open to an evaluation of the potential breeding fitness of my dog at that point. I just want a pet, but if she turns out to have something important to contribute to the gene pool then Iām not against the idea (with significantĀ guidance and oversight by my breeder)...so now weāre talking about possibly co-owning her pick pup. Which is not where I expected to end up with this dog search, but I am A-ok with it.
I have also applied for this rescue dog! (Ignore all theĀ āBritishā stuff - theyāre an American breed, and apparently whoever wrote this doesnāt know much.) I always said Iād get a secondhand dog instead of buying from a breeder if the opportunity arose. There arenāt a lot of ES in shelters, and Iām going to be picky about age and known temperament issues, so finding one that fits the bill is not a sure thing. But this guy sounds great, and heās really close by! Iām still trying to get in touch with his foster to find out more about him, but Iāve put an application in. Heās the best option Iāve seen in a year of following the breed rescue and several fb groups on the subject. They said theyāve had a lot of interest in him, though, so Iām not holding my breath.
