It is the second fortress built in Bhutan in the 16th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The mesmerizing architecture was first the capital of Bhutan until 1955. Today it serves as the administrative and religious capital of Punakha District. The fortress is located at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu rivers. People still believe that Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the architect of the nation, is in deep meditation at Machen Lhakhang inside the fortress. It's an extremely sacred and holy place, accessible only to His Majesty and the chief abbot.
