If there's one thing I've been bemoaning throughout the '10s it's been the complete lack of new trip-hop. What happened to all the Portisheads, Massive Attacks, and Sneaker Pimps of the world? Well, in 2019 I was able to find an artist to satiate that thirst in Pumarosa. While it's a little off center from trip-hop proper, it has a lot of the aspects of it that I've been missing. "Into The Woods" includes a dark and electronic bassline, clicking percussion, and a set of guitars that alternate between ominous and grungy. This setup is perfect for Isabel Munoz-Newsome to use her haunting voice to tell a story of traversing through unknown territory that doubles as an allegory for getting to know a mysterious person in her life.
Best Moment: Every time Isabel does a low vocal swoop for "ooh, that river, an ocean, the water", "see what's down beneath the surface", and "yeah, you waded into the water, baby" at 1:29, 2:19, and 3:25.
