After they lock her into the collar, suit, hood and gag and mask, they take the bunch of keys, attach a bell, and spend the whole afternoon toying with her. The bell tinkles, bright and loud and clear, and she huffs and mmmphs into the sweltering dark, taking tentative steps towards the sound, only to hear it flung elsewhere, forcing her to go the other way, growling, crawling in the sand when they trip her up, screaming a gagged scream when they dangle it right above her, only to snatch it away again.
It may be months or years before she gets out of her padded and confining mobile prison, but the bell and keys will always be close by: they will be lowered to chest level when they cuff her wrists to her waist, they will dangle from her collar when her wrists are cuffed behind her, they will jingle from behind her ankles when her wrists are bound to her ankles from the front, they will jingle and clink from just outside the cage, and not once will she be allowed to so much as grasp them with her gloved fingertips, though they jingle merrily away, reminding the girl trapped in the airless and cloying dark just how close by her freedom is.
