Yo, I know this is random, but I hope y'all are doing ok with the smoke going around! Had to deal with that myself for the first time weeks ago due to some wildfires down here in Florida. Got so bad that my family and I could actually smell the smoke in our apartment. 😔

Unfortunately it's something we have to deal with every summer now. Canada is covered in forest so there's always something burning somewhere, but the drier conditions with climate change etc. has been making them worse & they burn longer. A mountain/tourist town that isn't too far from me was 20% destroyed two years ago from fire.

𝙈𝙄𝘼 𝙒𝘼𝙎𝙉'𝙏 𝙐𝙎𝙐𝘼𝙇𝙇𝙔 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙅𝙀𝘼𝙇𝙊𝙐𝙎 𝙏𝙔𝙋𝙀. at least that's what she'd always thought. but she'd also never had a boyfriend before either. it's not like she can blame the girls, exactly. he's tall, handsome and all the things girls want in a man. blue irises lower to the marble flooring, hands wringing together nervously. no one knows and that's how they were supposed to keep things, at least for now. if she were to go over and break it up it'd certainly be noticed. it's bad enough her father disapproves of his presence . . . she'd practically begged for him to be allowed at the ball. after much discussion and some puppy dog eyes her father had caved, on the condition he leave by midnight. it's only nine and the night is young. if he spent the entire party with these girls then . . .

without thinking her feet begin to move, heels clicking loudly on the shiny flooring. no way was she letting their night be taken from her, regardless of the situation. a gentle hand presses to his arm and django turns to her instantly. mia offers her kindest smile to the girls, excusing them with the lure of cake. just as the words fall upon them a double door opens with the chef in tow, the cake at least ten layers high. luckily this is enough to have the girls scurrying off. relief washes over her, kind expression falling for a brief moment. mia despises confrontation. never would she want to make them feel bad . . . it's not as if they know.

❛ i'm sorry. ❜ she whispers, expression sheepish. ❛ i just . . . didn't want them to steal your attention the entire night. ❜ his words are enough to have her skin burning, eyes wide as she looks up at him. it's something she's only read in her romance books. something she never imagined someone would say to her. but the princess smiles, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. ❛ and i am yours. ❜

"Hey! If I were to tell you that I have a pretty sound theory in how to actually steal Christmas, would you be willing to hear me out?"

Walk, walk, stumble, walk, pause, walk, stumble, stumble - collapse. Was that the pattern she felt? Her head slowly fell to one side as she pondered the distant soul that had been moving through the forest she called home. It wasn't unusual for people to become lost, even in the modern era. This forest spanned many miles in all directions - it wasn't a pleasant stroll for hikers. It wasn't a camping trip that lasted a few days, no. Only if one stayed within the outskirts. The forest spanned for weeks, should one travel on foot.

Mortem absentmindedly noticed them once and forgot about them. It wasn't until things quieted down that she felt their presence still, making her head turn with a vague twinge of curiosity. Where were they going? Did they even know? There was one trail that cut through the forest and this soul was far from it.

Her tongue clicked against the roof of her mouth. It would seem she'd have to play guide - provided they proved themselves worth saving.

By the time she found him, he was still on the floor of the forest. A few leaves had fallen atop him but otherwise the beasts seemed to leave him be. Lucky for him, perhaps less so for her if this turned out to be a chore. The witch wandered around him, eyeing his clothing as she silently measured him with all the context clues one could find. As he laid unmoving she ventured closer, crouched down to roll him over. Her eyes took in the rest of his outfit, climbing higher to study his face. It took her a few seconds but then it all clicked into place - she had seen this one before. Not personally, of course.

Last time she visited town he had been on the news. A criminal, wasn't he? Did he flee authorities into the forest? Was this some manner of mistake? Either way, he was far from home. Amusement bubbled up as she decided then and there that this may just be fun.
