Been thinking about this for some time but talking to someone yesterday made me realize this needs to be shared.
Any OC is going to be, in some way, a self insert. We create based off what we know best, and ourselves are what most of us know the very best. All my boys reflect parts of me, no matter how different they are.
Raguel holds a lot of my own family problems, while Konstantine is that part of me that goes "fuck you" while also not wanting to rock the boat. Abigail is the sass I throw at my brother to damn often.
Grey is my internal chaos, free and unchained and not giving 2 shits about most things but still holding those bits of insecurity. Jacob is the part of me that wants to help everyone, but tries to stay within proper bounds. Lucas is closest to who I really am outside, quiet, reserved, unsure, but open and loud once I'm comfortable with people. Julian is my inner child that rants about everything I love.
Please, love your OCs, and just because you can see yourself in them doesn't make them a glorified self-insert. It makes them an outlet for so many things. We are multifaceted by nature, and that's what makes the rp funβthe different kinds of people we meet.
