A Time to be Silent

"Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles." - Proverbs 21:23
Here we have still another characteristic and advantage of wisdom. It enables its possessor to know the "time to be silent and the time to speak," and in the time to speak, what to say.
We have had repeated occasion to notice the incalculable amount and variety of mischief which the tongue causes. First, how its openly uttered or secretly whispered words may break hearts, ruin characters, sever friends, or bring individuals and families to beggary and disgrace. Second, how it spreads alienation and discord through wide circles of intimacy and affection. Third, how it may "pierce through with many sorrows" the spirits of those who were enjoying peace and love. And fourth, how it may be even as barbed daggers that take away life.
We have also noticed how unguarded words may recoil in mischief to ourselves. First, a word of slander rashly spoken may cost a man the humiliation of an apology, or the annoyance and expense of litigation resulting in the reparation of heavy damages. Second, the recollection of a hasty expression, along with the effects arising from it to those we did not mean to harm, may inflict not only severe and long-continued self-reproach but mental anxiety and distress as well. Third, the foolish utterances of an unguarded hour may go far to shake the credit of years of discretion, for the recollection of that hour of folly upon the mind of previous admirers can absolutely obliterate their former estimate of a man's sound sense and dignity, or at the very minimum result in a serious withdrawal of their respect. Fourth, it leads to inward deep remorse arising from a consciousness of having spoken inconsistently with our Christian profession and principles. The thought of having given an unfavorable impression of our religion, and failed of an opportunity of honoring God, is a thought none more galling, spirit-sinking, and severe to a Christian.
