Reposted from @thedreamdefenders The late blues icon and civil rights activist Nina Simone begged beyond her years, “how can you be an artist and not reflect the times?” Beloved writer, teacher, and Black feminist foremother Toni Cade Bambara echoed something the same when she insisted that “the role of the artist is to make revolution irresistible.”

June is Black Music Month, and we could sit here and tell you about how it began as an endeavor to mobilize Black economic power and ensure that Black people and artists weren’t being cut out of the commodification of Blackness or Black culture.

We could double down on the fact that Black music is the mother of all popular or mainstream genres today, from jazz to rock to rap—and that’s without stretching our ears beyond U.S. shores to hear Black people and culture have also served as the basis for sounds and rhythms indigenous to places around the whole world.

We could argue that hip-hop alone turned Black music and culture into a multi-billion dollar industry, with many of our own leading and shaping across sectors of the music business. But with the ongoing U.S.-backed genocide in Palestine, the foreign military invasion in Haiti, the U.A.E. -backed ethnic cleansing in Sudan and more, it bears repeating today that the artist – painter, poet, musician – is forever charged with a duty to speak truth to power.

Dream Defenders is also a product of the hip-hop generation, with deep roots in the practice and love of poetry and musicianship. In honor of Black Music Month, we’ve compiled just 50 great songs of protest and resistance. Spanning styles, genres and decades, each is a testament to the movement power and legacy of Black music.
