#protection magic

Leaf of Martian powers true,

Devil's rattle, pallid bloom,

Stand round about me, sword and shield,

My verdant allies of the field.

I don’t!

Protection spells come in a variety of forms, but most recognizable are amulets and worn charms that you keep on at all times. I always have a resin evil eye ward (that I made myself) clipped to my charm bracelet.

Inside is a mixture of salt and black pepper (vaguely resembling an eye), ingredients that I associate with protection and warding. Salt absorbs negative energy and black pepper banishes. The back is a bay leaf with ‘Return’ written on it. Since the materials are encased in resin, the spell has been made permanent and I don’t need to worry about refreshing it or changing it. This, I use to ward against all manner of negative energy, returning it to where it belongs.

I wear the charm on my left hand, which is associated with receiving, so I recommend wearing any protections on your left!

Other protections include spell bags (fill with herbs and hang at thresholds or put with your spell directly), herbs sprinkled at thresholds, and sigils (I use personal sigils as well as witches’ knots, but you can find preprogrammed sigils online— Just ensure you educate yourself on the culture and origins of any sigils you want to use and ensure you’re using them correctly) drawn on or etched into the frames of doors and windows as well as anointing with oil (olive oil is considered very holy and is great for corners, doors, and the back of your neck where your biggest spiritual portal opens up) and cleansing with smoke.

Before doing your hex, I recommend burning some ethically sourced sage, palo santo, rosemary, or other positive herbs and allowing the smoke to cascade around your body to clear your energy. While doing so, call upon spirits of benevolence, be it your deities or ancestors or etc, and ask for protection directly. Write your protections down, like a contract, and include them in your spell with your protective ingredients.

Something like “This hex may not stick to me. The energy I send is intended for (data center).”

(I’m not an eloquent witch when it comes to incantations, but that’s part of the chaos of my practice. It may behoove you to take time to write intentions yourself with more structure and rhyme to them.) The point is that you need to instruct the protections to do exactly what you want and be specific about it, and it will work.

But do be specific.

Lack of specificity is a place where naughtier spirits like to squeeze between the cracks.

i was asked to detail my process in crafting a witch bottle, commonly referred to as a baneful ward in some witchcraft spaces - while i will not be divulging my personally chosen ingredients, i will give you the basic rundown.

witch bottles typically involve two vessels - one to hold taglocks that represent a target, aka, the things or people you want to protect (you, your pets, your family, your belongings, etc.) plus benefic ingredients, and another to hold baneful ingredients that act as a barrier of protection surrounding the target/s. think of the outer jar acting as a shield for the smaller jar (you know, the one that represents the things you hold dear). the easiest (and safest) way to do this is probably with glass jars which are more durable than plastic, cardboard, paper, or cloth especially if your baneful ingredients contain sharp objects - place a small jar affixed to the inside of the large jar either with hot glue or glue dots. add personal taglocks to the small jar and seal it with wax. add baneful ingredients to the large jar - set a black candle on the top of it to melt down and hopefully seal the entire jar but if that doesn't work then just drip wax on and around the lid.
