Musing an AU where Word post banishment from the priesthood, ends up in the clutches of the prophets. Deets and ideas under the cut.
Iāve always liked to think that Wordās expulsion moment is his most vulnerable, post years of priesthood indoctrination (treating them as a cult, by and large). I also enjoy entertaining the headcanon that the priests doĀ deal with their problems. Word being a possible problem? Yeah, they expelled him with the intention of him not surviving the wastelands.
Through a stroke of luck, he does manage to find Dragon City, meeting Zulay, whose influence finally cements his desires to conquer Dragon City for himself. But here... that influence is instead a variant of the priesthoodās teachings. Wordās anger and opinions validated by none other than Propheci, whom decides this human is useful. He doesnāt need to use much of the Orange mind gear to create a staunchly loyal follower of his cause.
In the prophets temple, Wordās gear knowledge is invaluable, improving both quality of life for the prophets in addition to arming them much more swiftly for an attack on Dragon City. Conversely, because Word did not reach Dragon City and start his gear empire with Zulay, Dragon City Security, one of the major customers of Paynn Inc, are severely underequipped to handle powerful orange dragons. Much less the average dragon racer or civilian.
Itās possible thereās some sort of clash with Zulay eventually, and a mutual respect. Not sure how the romance would go, but in every universe Zulay is always the one human that intrigues and somehow connects with Word. Further into the future, people like Reepyr and those who follow him would be in opposition to Propheci, Word and any other dragons that follow him.
This AU also poses interesting questions since Beau would not exist. Connor, not knowing Word still lives, doesnāt feel too anxious to breed the dragon of legend. Lol anyway, Word changing really influences the plot and even existence of some characters lmao. Iāve not thought that far, I just think itād be fun for Word to be subservient to Orange dragons. I adore this fucked up in the head/socially ex cult member šš

How do you think did the Prophets' society work before the events of The Lost Track of Doom? How did the dragons sustain their humans? Or did they leave them some liberty to take care of themselves? Were some humans born slaves? (Did the Prophets breed them like humans in Dragon City breed the dragons?) How long have they been slaves of the dragons? I am trying to write a fic, and having some insight from another fan would be very interesting and helpful - if you don't mind sharing, of course
Hmm, interesting questions...I shall endeavor to give you my headcanons! Which very much are headcanons, we know absolutely nothing about how the prophets work, beyond the fact that Propheci is the Head Prophet, and that the humans arenāt allowed their own agency.
So, as always, Dragon Booster gets me rambling and giving out essay-level analyses, so fair warning: long read ahead.
I imagine it would be a case of the humans being more often than not grafted to the saddle of their assigned prophet, and speaking for him when the times comes that they need it. But it seems that in the episode, we actually donāt see many prophets with saddles, thereby meaning not many have humans. Itās entirely likely that thereās some degree of ranking among the Prophets, and once youāre high enough in the ranks, youāre allowed a human prophet.
As for sustaining the humans, there *are* animals in the world beyond the few weāve seen. From what I remember, I think animals were only designed on a needed-for-an-episode basis. Hell, in the Secret Episode 0: The Alchemist, there wereĀ ādragon houndsā, or drag-hounds, that we never got to see. I imagine thereās a decent amount of game in the Wastelands if the hydrags stick around. Packs of predators like that wouldnāt hang around somewhere with no prey, same for the muhorta. Who knows, maybe the Prophets have their own dedicated garden for edible plant life, and thatās one of the ways the dragons support them? Obey us, serve us, and weāll make sure you get fed so that you can better assist us. As for water, well, thatās never touched upon in the show at all, but I imagine the Prophets have their own source, or else they could never stay in that temple. Either they have their humans fetch some from a nearby source, with a dragon escort, or have their own integrated into the temple.
I imagine thereās some degree of independence, to the extent that I mentioned before. The dragons wonāt want to have to baby their humans all the time, they may be their servants *coughs*slaves*coughs*, but they still have needs. The Prophets would make someĀ sort of accomodations. Who knows, maybe the prophets allow it as an anti-mutiny regime? Keep your humans happy and subservient, and theyāll let you rule them forever. The humans willingly gave themselves to the dragons, but still, a people will only handle cruel treatment for so long. That isĀ why the dragons rebelled 3,000 years ago, so the prophets would want to keep their humans some degree of content.
I personally doubt that the Prophets would breed humans like the humans breed dragons. While that is entirely a possibility, I donāt think the prophets would care enoughĀ to put that much effort into their slaves. Also, the humans of Dragon City have all but forgotten that dragons are a sentient, intelligent race, and have reduced them to mere animals. Even the dragons themselves seem to have forgotten, and thatās why so few of them behave, because they allowed themselves to be subjugated to avoid a war, but now theyāve forgotten who they are. The human slaves of the Prophets, however, maintained their humanity and their agency. They can still tend to their own matters, albeit to a limited degree, while the dragons of Dragon City have been reduced to mere beasts.
I have a feeling that the humans have been enslaved to the Prophets for a very long time. Clearly, not since the first war ended, as that war ended with all dragons being purified. I would say...1,500 years ago, at most. Because it has to be close enough to the present that dragons were rebred, but long enough ago that the Orange Prophets would fall into legend. The Orange Control-Class Dragon fell into obscurity by present day, with very few people believing that they were real. When Mortis shares the tale of the Lost Track of Doom, and Parm expresses fear and concern, Mortis chuckles and saysĀ āI said it was legend.ā A man raised and trained by whatās left of the Dragon Priests, and he considers this tale to be legend. Clearly, the Prophets have not been seen for a very long time.
...welp, hope you wanted a paragraph per question, because thatās whatācha got! X3 THE MYTH RIDER STRIKES AGAIN.
Appreciate A Dragon Day ~ Dragon Booster: Control-Class Dragons
Beware the orange Control-Class dragon, as they are one of the most intelligent and vengeful of all dragons. They do not let humans ride them so much as they enslave humans to help them race and battle. Secretly, the orange dragon is waiting for a chance to start a war with humans, but for now they take pleasure in messing in human affairs with their nihilist riders and highly destructive gear. Orange gear is hard to come by, extremely difficult to control and very, very dangerous.
This is how it started occurring to me that maybe thoseĀ āhornsā on Gunny werenāt horns. I was looking closely at them, and realized that if those wereĀ his horns, then why would the saddle be on the inside of his right horn, but on the outside of his left horn? Thatās when I got the suspicion, and examined everyone elseās saddles. Thatās when I noticed...these were all the same shape, position, and location...just different colors...
Gunny never had horns...the world will never be the same...
I have this headcanon that, after the events of The Lost Track of Doom, Propheci actually tried to work with Reepyr and the other humans, because he seemed to be sincerely moved by the Dragon Booster's actions, he wanted to give humans a chance. But, without the mental gear and unable to communicate with their dragons, some of the riders started to treat their dragons like they are treated in Dragon City, perhaps without even realizing it. And this scared Propheci, and he snapped back.
I really reallyĀ like this headcanon, if only because it allows Propheci to not be absolutely villainized. I just rewatched the very end of that episode, and I confess he still seemed kind of sketchy to me with how quickly he seemed to have turned around. But who knows, you could be right and he couldāve been sincere.
I like the idea of Propheci as a more sympathetic villain; one who isnāt truly evil, but driven to do questionable things out of fear and the desire to see his people safe. Like, heās the kind of character who knows maybe too much about history, and Propheci fears that history will always repeat itself and mankind can never be allowed to have their own say. He knows what humans did to dragons before the war, he was educated about it by the prophets that came before him, and he knows that humans have done it yet again.
As for the human prophets who ended up treating their dragons a way that scared Propheci, itās the fault of neither party that the treatment began to resurface, OR that Propheci got scared. The Prophets as a whole probably had this toxic, oppressive relationship going on for a thousand years. Nobody knows how to properly interact with each other, and they only had one brief example to teach them otherwise and learn from. Theyāre still isolated in their temple, with hundreds of years of oppression and fearā¦they only had a few minutes of proper interactions to counteract all of that toxicity with.
So I really like this idea, because a Propheci who is afraid of history and afraid for his people, a Propheci that your heart bleeds for and that you want to come aroundā¦I LIKE IT, I LOVE IT, I WANT SOME MORE OF IT.Ā

Musing some word and propheci interaction going nowhere... Word is so orange for a person obsessed with black draconium haha. Also he has like. Same chin as propheci. Wonder if that was intentional etc.
